"Where are we going? Class is about to start and I need to get to Algebra," Sadie complained and I glared back at her. If she had algebra next then she was in the wrong building anyway.
"The library, now shut up," I didn't mean to sound harsh but I also knew that if a teacher spotted us heading to the library they'd probably stop and ask why. It would look suspicious if two students were rushing to the library once second period starts.
We reached the library in no time and I lead the way through the heavy wooden doors, holding them for Sadie before heading in myself. It was quiet as usual, only a few students were at the tables already getting a head start on studying. The librarian, who had been here the longest out of the staff, acknowledged us with a quick glare before going back to reading the book laid out in front of her. I wonder if she could even still see properly.
I rushed Sadie past the front desk and up the stairs leading to the second floor. The farthest row, and least visited, held a small section labeled "History of Lawn Mowers" and consisted of twelve books. More than I would've thought honestly. The upkeep on this row was terrible too, a lot of the lights had been burned out since fall of last year.
We took a hard right, you wouldn't be able to see it from the end of the row, and headed up the old metal spiral staircase. The short hallway at the top was a breeze and before I knew it we were barging into the room.
The boys turned to stare at Sadie while she took in the area we spent a lot of our time in. Probably too much time honestly.
"Guys this is Sadie, if you haven't heard already, she lives in our dorm," I lightly pushed the small of Sadie's back so she sat down on one of the couches in the room. "Play nice boys, she's still getting the hang of things around here,"
"What's up?" Jon nodded towards Sadie politely but kept his attention on the TV screen and the video game he was playing.
"Want a soda?" I asked from where I was standing in front of the mini fridge but Sadie said no, so I grabbed a grape soda and took a seat next to her on the couch. She didn't seem to be too uncomfortable so that was good.
"I'm Charlie," Charlie took his eyes off the TV for just a second to smile at Sadie before going back to playing. I could see Sadie's cheeks begin to turn pink and for some reason I wasn't thrilled that my best friend had that affect on her, but it wasn't going to keep me up at night.
"Nice to meet you guys," Sadie spoke shyly but I knew she actually wasn't shy at all. I settled into the couch and stretched my arms out, over the back of the couch and sighed.
"Don't tell anyone about this place, only a few guys know about this place to begin with so consider yourself lucky, sweetheart," Charlie explained quietly to Sadie as I cracked open the grape soda I had grabbed and chugged half of it in one gulp.
"This is cool, it's like your own secret fort up here," Internally I groaned and watched the boys turn to glare at the new girl. I swear girls never understood the importance of a man cave.
"This is not a fort, it's a hangout. Big difference," I scoffed and almost kicked myself for not using the word 'man cave' but I knew Charlie wasn't a big fan of that label.
Charlie glanced up at Sadie and gave her a playful wink before saying, "That's disrespectful, you know?"
Sadie didn't respond to the backlash she had received, instead she sunk back into the couch even more and continued to watch the game quietly. I bet she was thinking we were ridiculous for ridiculing her for her poor choice of wording.
I took my turn playing the next round and handed the controller back to Charlie for the game to follow. After that round, right on time, the second period bell rang meaning it was time to head to third period.
Sadie quickly stood up, grabbing her backpack and hurried towards. I had a feeling Sadie was a bit of a teachers pet.
"Where are you going?" Jon had handed me his controller now and the game was about to start so I wasn't about to look up at Sadie and risk being the first kill of the game.
"Third period, I can't skip the whole first day of school like you," She shot back at me with some attitude and all us guys chuckled in response. I could almost hear her eye roll from where she stood behind me.
"Have fun and don't get lost out there, it's a big world," Sadie slammed the door behind her and I knew I had successfully gotten under her skin with my sarcasm. She reminded me of a lost puppy dog sometimes.
"How long do you think she'll last here?" Charlie asked, standing up to get himself a soda now.
"She can't even handle playing hookie," Jon laughed and stole the controller from me after I had died for the third time in a row, "you're screwing up my K/D, Agather,"
"She's hot though," Charlie mumbled before taking a sip of his soda, "You sure you don't want to switch roommates?"
I grabbed one of the couch pillows and threw it at Charlie, smirking over at him when the pillow hit him in the face. Charlie laughed but flipped me off in return and tossed the pillow back.
"I was supposed to have my own room this year," I complained, sinking back into the couch and mindlessly watching the boys play.
"I can't believe you're complaining about having a girl as your roommate," Charlie rolled his eyes at me and, angrily, shoved his controller into my hands. He wasn't doing too well this round either.
"Why wouldn't I complain about that?"
"Because think about it, you're probably going to come home to a clean dorm room every day, smell-good candles and maybe even get some cuddles at the end of the night," Jon turned to wiggle his eyebrows at me dramatically and now it was his turn to get a pillow to the head.
"You're assuming Sadie is like a typical girl," I sighed and stood up, tossing the controller back to Charlie, "what normal girl would agree to live in a dorm full of rowdy guys like us?"
Jon and Charlie exchanged looks and both shrugged. I grabbed my backpack and said goodbye to the guys before heading out into the hallway. Third period was already halfway over so there was no point in even showing up. I'll try again tomorrow I guess.
Suddenly my phone was buzzing in my pocket.
We need to talk ASAP! What the hell Kent? Heard an interesting rumor and for your sake, I hope it's just that!
Of course word had traveled fast around school and why wouldn't Missy, Queen of drama, know all about it. Instead of replying I slid my phone back into my pocket and turned around to head back into the hangout. That was the only place Missy couldn't reach me for now.
