The boys were pumped and riled up, roaring as we prepared for the first game of the season in the locker room. Coach had just given us his last 'pep talk' before we had to head out to start our warmups. This game would be a great start to a great season.
"Let's go, you're the last one out, team captain," Charlie called out but I was still shuffling through my gym bag looking for my jersey. "Or should I say 'co-captain',"
I rolled my eyes but kept my back facing Charlie. Of course he was still butthurt about not being voted team captain this year, if only he knew I had been the one to ask Coach to make him co-captain with me. By the time I gave up my search, realizing I had lost my away game jersey and that coach was definitely going to ring my neck after the game, I turned and jogged out of the locker room.
As I was rounding the corner I nearly ran Missy over, who was standing and talking with Charlie.
"What are you doing back here?" I asked, as my eyes trailed down to the jersey that Missy had draped over her cheer uniform. My mood immediately soured as I saw the large number 24 on the front. "How the hell did you get my jersey?"
Charlie turned and rushed away towards the field, obviously not wanting to be a part of this drama. Neither did I.
It was tradition for cheerleaders to wear one of the football players jersey's for our first home game but I don't remember Missy ever asking or giving her permission to wear it.
"I got it out of your bag," Missy replied smugly and I couldn't stop my mouth from hanging open in shock.
"What do you mean you got it from my bag? You went into the guys locker room to steal my jersey?" I shouldn't even be here arguing with Missy, I needed to be out on the field warming up with my team and getting mentally prepared for the game.
"No of course not," She was acting like this was no big deal. Like it wouldn't be the talk of the school tomorrow if she showed up on the sidelines in my jersey, after all the crap we've been through. Not to mention I didn't want her wearing my number, never again actually.
"What's even the big deal? You're overreacting Kent, hun," Missy purred, taking a step closer to me before I held up my hands and glared down at her.
"Because I never said you could wear it!" I ended up yelling louder than I had planned but nothing gets through to this girl.
"It looks great on me Kent, besides all the other girls are wearing jerseys!" Missy yelled and stomped her foot in the process. Childish.
"Take it of now, we aren't together Missy and you're lucky I even talk to you still," I crossed my arms and Missy stomped her foot again, as if that was going to make me change my mind. As Missy was opening her mouth to scream at me some more and draw more attention towards us from the fan section that could see the two of us, a freshman came stumbling out of the locker room. He looked lost.
"Hey, get over here," I called out to him and the skinny freshman made his way towards Missy and I. "Do you have your away jersey in your locker?"
The freshman, maybe Paul was his name if I remember correctly, nodded his head quickly, glancing nervously between Missy and I.
"Go get it, you're going to let this pretty lady wear it for the game tonight,"
Missy glared up at me as the boy rushed away to grab his jersey.
"Are you serious? Now I get to represent a stupid freshman who probably won't even step one foot on the field tonight?" Missy's face was red with anger and probably embarrassment as she realized I wasn't about to let her step foot on the field wearing my number.
"It'll be a hell of a lot better than you representing me," I couldn't help but smirk at the pure shock on Missy's face as I began walking away from her, "Leave my jersey on my car after the game,"
I began walking towards the field, knowing Coach was probably going to yell at me for being late, and as I looked back up from my feet I saw her. Sadie was standing in line to get some food with her one friend, Jackie. They had definitely witnessed that whole scene play out, I tried not to let my cheeks go red from embarrassment myself now.
"Nice sign you got there," I muttered to Sadie, winking quickly and making sure to smile at Jackie before I hurried towards the field, "You've got the wrong number though,"
I didn't have time to look back and see their reaction before Coach was screaming my name.
With only sparing three minutes to warm up, I wasn't surprised when the first three plays Coach called were passes to the other receivers. In fact, I didn't touch the ball until the last few minutes of the first quarter. But as soon as I did, we got a touchdown. And then another.
The game was over before I knew what had even happened, our team coming out on top with a score of 54-14.
The locker room, although smelly, was pure chaos as we rushed inside after the game was called. All the boys cheering and hollering as Coach tried to calm them down. When no one would listen to coach he grabbed the loud cowbell that sat on his desk and rang it in our ears continuously.
"You all act like you won the damn superbowl or something, sheesh," Coach grumbled before settling in on one of the benches as we all took a knee, "You fellas worked hard out there and it paid off, but don't for one second think that every game is going to be a walk in the park. You boys have a long road ahead of you if you're planning on going to state at all, you hear?"
After a few more harsh but loving, in Coach's way, words he finally dismissed us so we could shower up and make it to the last minute party that was happening in the gym.
"I don't think we've ever gotten so much love from the bleachers before," Squid muttered as we all showered.
"How would you know, freshman?" I snapped at him and the boys snickered from around me.
"A freshman who almost had more time on the field tonight than you, Mr. StAr FoOtBaLl PlAyEr," Squid mocked back and I chucked my almost empty bottle of shampoo at his head, watching as it bounced off his skull with a subtle 'clunk'. The boys erupted into laughter and pestering before we were all getting dressed, smelling much better than before.
Although Squid did have a point, I had never seen so many glittery posters being waved around in the stands before tonight. I had noticed one thing though, Sadie hadn't been holding a sign at all. I wonder if she hadn't had time to make one or just didn't know who to cheer on.
For some reason my mind went straight to Charlie but I quickly shook my head and and the thought melted away. I couldn't be thinking about negative stuff like that, not after we had just won our first game.
"You guys ready or what?" Sid called out to us and most of the guys shuffled out of the musty locker room.
"It's gonna be a great night," Dylan muttered from beside me as Sid passed around his flask full of whiskey that we all quickly took a pull of as we headed straight to the gym where we could already hear music blasting.
