Headed this way?” The unknown handsome guy asked, all his things collected off the floor.
Damn. “ Uh, no actually” Will said the disappointment obvious in his voice. He cringed at that. If he was going too be seeing more of this guy around school he was going to have to work on that. The handsome stranger shrugged his shoulders and smiled at Will again. “Well I guess I’ll see you around then…?”
He quirked an eyebrow as if asking Will a question and it took a second for Will too realize he wanted his name. “ Will.” He muttered eyes darting down from the stranger's face, then making eye contact he said a little more confidently “Will Byers.”
“David.” Handsome Stra…David replied. Will made a mental note to refer too him as David from now on and not Handsome stranger. Because that would be an embarrassing slip up. “Well I guess I'll see ya around, Will Byers.” David grinned, walking past Will and into the crowd of teenagers on their way to class. “Yeah, see ya!” Will said, hoping that he didn’t sound too excited at the prospect.
This was it! This was his chance to finally get over his pathetic 6 year crush on Mike total straight guy Wheeler. No more pining after every touch of the shoulder, no more hopeful stares while Mike was busy making goo goo eyes at El. Now he could focus on David - possibly not a totally straight guy.
And sure it’s small town Indiana so it’s obviously not the most progressive place on the planet but he couldn’t be the only queer person that existed in the school. Just because people didn’t talk about it much and when they did it was in hushed undertones queer, fairy, different, didn’t mean those people didn’t exist right? It just meant they were harder too find. And Will felt a rush of hope for the first time in a while. Because- and he hoped he wasn’t deluding himself here- David just seemed a bit different.
He wanted to be over Mike even if it meant pining over this new guy David for a while. Because let’s be honest Mike was barely focused on being Will’s friend half the time. Screw the trauma they’d gone through or whatever because he had been like this forever. Pulling back then apologizing when things got scary. Walking all over Will and taking him for granted until Will pulled back. Will didn’t deserve that and he so wanted to be done thinking about Mike Wheeler.
So he wandered through his first classes of the day stuck in his own mind content to be occupied by his imagination and get lost deep in thought during what could only be described as a boring first day.
Or at least he was content until he realized he was running late for his last class of the day. The one he was looking most forward to , His new art class. “Damn it” He muttered, speeding down the hallway looking for the class.
He burst through the door while glancing at his watch. Okay only 5 minutes late.
“Ah Mr. Byers” his new teacher said with a disapproving look on her face. She had a long face with pointed glasses which exaggerated the look of disapproval making him want too wilt into the floor. He hated being the center of attention. “I'm glad you’ve made time to grace us with your presence on the first day of school.” Will began muttering an apology but she interrupted with a little more grace on her face as she said
“I’ve already had everyone join up in groups but since you are the last one here you can pair up with David over there.” Will turned to look and sure enough there was the handsome stranger. “You will be drawing each other.” Will nodded trying not to blush as he walked over to David who seemed quite pleased to be seeing Will again.
