What had he done wrong? Mike wondered to himself as he stormed out of Hawkins High. I mean he showed up right? Yeah sure It was at the end of the first day and he had barely spoken to Will but he had shown up. He had helped Will put his stuff away and he had offered to hang out with Will to make up for the weird situation a couple weeks ago when they had tried to play D+D. I mean it wasn't Mike's fault that Will pulled away more and more every day, and Will obviously didn't have any problems with other friends. Like David. What kind of a name was David anyways. And who goes over to someone's house a day after meeting them. Mike barely went over to Will's house anymore and he was Will's best friend.
Mike's angry thoughts came to a halt when he spotted Nancy's car in the parking lot, correction his car now. When Nancy had gone to NYU this fall she had told Mike he could use her car while he was gone as long as he paid for any repairs.
Mike got into the car and pulled out of the school parking lot, which took him 10 minutes as none of the teenagers he saw every day were particularly skilled drivers. He sighed as he drove home, deciding to turn right where he would normally turn left to get to his house. To the right there was a small forest where he parked the car. He reached into the glovebox and grabbed a cigarette. Nancy would kill him if she knew he was smoking but she would kill him to find a way to bring him back to life and kill him again if she found out he was smoking in her car.
So he smoked in the woods now. Sure his mom smelled the cigarette smoke on him and frowned when he hugged her to say hi but she never said anything more than that. Karen Wheeler liked to pretend everything was perfect, so as long as Mike didn't smoke where she could see it as far as she was concerned it didn't happen. God knows his dad didn't pay enough attention to care if he was smoking or not.
When he had finished smoking he drove home and opened the door. There was his mother reading Holly a story at the kitchen table. She smiled as Mike walked in.
"Hey honey, how was your first day at school?" Mike tried to push away the annoyance at his mothers questions. He loved her, he really did but she had no idea what he had gone through the last few years and it was just hard to explain to her why he was sometimes in a bad mood, or freaked out over the lights flickering, or yelled at Holly when she jumped around the corner to scare him. His mom just didn't get it, didn't get him.So he grinned at her as he headed down to the basement "It was good mom, gonna be a tough year school wise though. Gonna spend most of my time holed up down here studying." Of course Mike was lying out of his ass. He planned to spend most of this year not caring about his grades and getting absolutely wasted.
Once he got down into the basement he slumped down onto the couch sulking for a while, thinking about Will's delightful new friend and pushing down the nagging voice in his head wondering why Will wanted to hang out with a new dude who looked exactly like Mike instead of just hanging out with Mike.
