Max an El bombarded Mike and Will as they left school that day. Max shocked Will coming up from behind him and wrapping her arms around his neck causing him to lose his balance. As they both tumbled to the sidewalk they laughed. Mike and El stood there laughing at them. El just shook her head. After Max and Will had dusted themselves off and stood up again, they started walking towards the parking lot. "So guess what?" Max started. Everyone looked at her expectantly. "We are going to a party on Friday."
Will groaned inwardly, he was not a party person. Not that he had ever been to a party, but he doesn't think he's a party person. Mike and El seemed to be having a different party as they both grinned and told Max it was a great idea. Will just rolled his eyes and accepted his fate. "You can bring David if you want to Will." Max said enthusiastically. Mike's eyes met Will's and Will new he was checking to see if he was okay. He gave Mike a small nod before saying: "Actually we broke up this morning." For some reason Max didn't look to sorry about this even though she said, "Oh sorry about that Will, he was cute." He saw her eyes wander to Mike questioningly, but he ignored her.
How Max had figured out he was into Mike he wasn't sure, but he would not be having Max as his wingman that wouldn't end well for anybody. He glanced briefly at his watch, "Shit I promised mom I'd be home by three thirty and it's already three. I'm gonna be so late." Mike looked at him confused. "Will, I'll give you a ride. You won't be late." Will nodded approximately and they walked to the car.
Mike knew Will just needed some time to think, so the car ride was a relatively quiet one. He wanted to reach out and put his arm on his shoulder but wasn't sure if that would be weird right now. He did think it was weird that while he was sad for his friend, he wasn't too sad that Will and David were broken up. He also found himself staring at Will more than the actual road for most of the drive. The rest of the week went by slowly, enough of the school year had passed that they all had tons of homework and with the party on Friday everyone had a lot to do. So Will didn't see any of his friends until Friday morning when his mom dropped him off at school. She had given him a questioning look but hadn't asked anything about David. As he walked into school Mike walked up next to him. Will felt his heart skip as Mike started speaking and blushed awkwardly, embarrassed by his reaction.
"Hey Will."
"Hey Mike."
"Did you want to come over to my place until we go to the party tonight? You can stay at my place afterwards as well?" He offered
Will nodded happily "Sure Mike, sounds great."Great. Now that Will's brain had the information that he would be spending the night at Mikes house the idea of school was simply boring and uninteresting. Instead he spent the entire school day thinking about Mike and what they would do.
School finished and Will couldn't spot Mike, he assumed Mike was just at Nancy's car as usual, so he walked over there. Then he saw Mike. Mike was at the car, and he was talking to Jennifer Hayes. Will felt jealously spring up into him until he realized that they were talking about him. Jennifer said "Okay, well if he's coming to the party let him know I asked about him." Will hung back. She wanted to go to the party with him.
Once Jennifer left Will walked over to Mike. "What did she want?" He asked hoping his tone didn't come across as to cold. He was surprised to hear the frostiness in Mike's own voice when he responded, "She wanted to go to the party with you." As they hopped in the car Will smiled to himself. "Not really my type." He muttered managing to get a chuckle out of the other boy. "Yeah, last I checked Jennifer Hayes was not a dude." They laughed and Will feigned injury as he said "You do realize people can like both right? Maybe I will go with Jennifer." Mike looked up from the road with a peculiar face that Will couldn't read. "Kidding." He said quickly. "I mean yeah people can like both, but I don't." Mike laughed awkwardly and turned his head back to the road. You could like both?It wasn't in a weird way or anything it's just that he was trying to read Will's expression. His stupid bowl cut that everyone hated but Mike didn't mind was hiding his eyebrows, but Mike assumed they were furrowed up now. Mike wasn't sure what kept drawing his eyes to Will's face after he had read his friends expression but when Will turned to look at him and he didn't move his head fast enough he knew that was the end of the staring. He focused instead on the road and trying to calm the blush on his face.
While Mike spent the rest of the drive thinking about that little piece of information, Wil spent it studying the other boys face. Mike was so beautiful. His curly hair and his nose, and God, his cheekbones. When Mike had first come to California and Will had seen the way his face had changed, he thought he was gonna pass out right then and there. Will honestly was surprised that Mike wasn't dating someone else yet. El and him had broken up a couple weeks ago and Mike was hot. That was the nice part of breaking up with David he thought to himself. He didn't have to feel bad about thinking about Mike anymore, and he thought about Mike a lot.
