I had been tutoring Aaron for about a week now. I still didn't like him but I was slowly getting to know that he wasn't that bad of a person I perceived him as.
"Here Hailes, your coffee". Aaron's voice brought me out of my thoughts. I looked up at him with an exasperated look and said, "Stop calling me Hailes, Aaron".
"Why? I like it", He said.
"But I don't", Aaron pouted when I said this. So I continued, "Ugh, never mind. Let's get started".
I checked my phone and saw that it was 4pm now and said, "Ok fine, let's end it over here for today", and then I started packing my things.
"Let's sit by the beach for a while. It's gonna be sunset soon", Aaron said.
I sighed and looked towards the beach. It was looking very pretty today and well it's not like I have something to do now, so I found myself saying, "Fine, let's go". Aaron's eye widened a bit, probably shocked how I agreed without putting up any fight. I moved past him and started walking to the beach. Aaron jogged and started walking besides me.
We both sat on the sand and looked towards the sea. There was a comfortable silence between us.
"You know, as a kid I loved coming to beach with my parents. It used to be so fun, just us being a small happy family without any complications or problems of life", Aaron said. I turned my head towards him but he was still looking at the sea. He continued, "But sometime while growing up, all this stopped. There were no beach days together as a family. Even if we did get free time, my dad forced me to practice more and more to become "perfect" as he says. He started comparing me with others, how I had to practice more and wasn't good enough. The last time I came at a beach was when I was 12".
He finally looked at me and then chuckled without any hint of emotion and said, "Sorry for wallowing in self-pity and blabbering about it to you". He again looked at the sea and said, "Do you mind going for a swim in the sea with me?"
At any other time, I would have declined his request directly but after listening all this about him and seeing him so sad, I don't know what came over me but I wanted to see him like his normal happy self again and to make him smile. So I agreed and took off my tshirt and pants and went in the water. I looked back at him and saw him blinking with confusion and something which I couldn't decipher. He shook his head smiling and took off his clothes as well. He joined me in the water and we started swimming peacefully.
After a while, Aaron started splashing water on me and even I started doing the same. We both were a laughing and giggling mess. After so long I had this much fun with someone other than Lucas. To stop me from splashing water upon him, he came closer to me and pulled both of my hands in his. We both stopped laughing and something changed between us. He started coming more and more close to me. We were almost going to kiss but a voice in the back of my head stopped me from doing so. What the fuck are you doing Hailey? Don't start feeling things for guys. You know how it went the last time. And this is Aaron we are talking about. If Lucas gets to know about any of this, he's going to be very angry.
I backed off and I saw his face falling with disappointment but he was quick to clear it off. "Umm, we should go now. It's pretty late", I said. "Yeah, sure", Aaron replied awkwardly while scratching his neck.
We both wore our clothes and took off with our things. "Bye, Aaron. I won't be tutoring you tomorrow as I am going out. I'll see you later". "It's a bit late. I'll drop you off to your house". "Okay".
Aaron sent me an amused glance and said, "You know you are being very agreeable today. I don't think now that I have seen this side of you that I want to go back to seeing a grumpy Hailey". I sent him an unamused glance.
We were walking silently and I finally decided to break the silence by saying, "If it makes you feel any better, I just want to say that you are not alone feeling these type of things. I used to go to a lot of picnics with my mom and dad along with my sisters. We still sometimes go but after the death of my dad, it hasn't been the same. We all start reminiscing about how happy we used to be at our picnics and it's just not the same now as it was before. So we kept on reducing our hangouts and now that I have shifted in another town, I am not even able to see them. We just talk on facetime".
He glanced at me with a sad look. I continued, "And you should know that sometimes it's fine to talk about your feelings with someone rather than bottling it up. Fuck, I am a hypocrite saying this and I don't even know why I am saying all this stuff to you. But you know what fuck it, I am not gonna overthink about everything and make a big deal of it".
He sent me a genuine smile and said, "I am liking this Hailey so much better, you don't even know". "You know you spoil the mood by opening your goddamn mouth", I said. He chuckled.
We finally reached my house. "Bye, Hailes". I gave him a small smile and said, "Bye".
The last thought I had in my mind before sleeping that day was that why the fuck am I smiling to him. Shit. This is not you Hailey. Stop being nice to him and be your usual grumpy self. Ugh whatever. I am too sleepy to be thinking about anything. ________________________________________________________
