Staring at her computer, she typed rapidly. Two pairs of grey eyes bore into her from afar. Nines turned to Gavin, confusion subtly laced into his features, "What is she doing?"

Shrugging, Gavin put his feet up on his desk and sipped his coffee, "Something to do with our recent case. She's been on edge all afternoon."

"Has she had anything to eat for lunch?"

"I dunno. Didn't see her eat anythin'."

"Perhaps I should get her something to ea-"

"Don't even try it, Tin Can."

"Detective Reed, I hate to inform you but the Androids have equal rights and I'm here to work alongside you, not replace you."

"Don't get smart with me, asshole-!" Gavin flinched at the sound of a phone being practically thrown into its cradle. Looking over, he saw Y/n visibly shaking with fear overtaking her conscience.

"Her heart rate is 120." Shooting up from his seat, Gavin ran to the h/c's side and kneeled beside her, Nines following.

"Jesus, Y/n, what happened?"

"I-I was looking for Gemma's number on the system and when I found it and called I heard heavy breathing and... G-Gemma, she was begging for her life. She screamed and the line cut out..."

"Fuck!" Standing up, he ran a shaky hand through his hair and gripped it roughly while cursing under his breath. Nines held a prosthetic hand on Y/n's shoulder for comfort whilst Gavin fished through his jeans, pulling a set of keys out of his pocket, "Get your jacket on, we're going to the crime scene."

Throwing his keys to the h/c, he quickly scribbled her address down. Y/n was quick to grab her coat, throwing it on while running with Nines out of the building to Gavin's car. Ripping the paper from the pad, he ran after the two and found himself in the driver's seat, the vehicle already roaring.

Handing her the address, he was quick to begin driving whilst she tried to find the address on google maps, holding her phone up so that he could direct himself. Turning his sirens on, he went as fast as he could to the building she lived in.

After 10 minutes of driving, the three arrived at the house, the humans pulling out their guns whilst the android followed close behind. They opened the door, Nines being the first to see Gemma lying dead on the floor. Her clothes were covered in her blood, a gaping hole in her chest, and a cavity where her heart should have been. Y/n was quick to call backup as Gavin and Nines searched the premises to see if there was any sign of the killer.

Shaking, she walked to the girl, feeling for a pulse. There was no sign of life. Gemma truly was dead. "Holy shit..." Backup came sometime later, Gavin and Nines walking in just after they arrived. "Did you find anything?"

"We... We didn't find our guy. But we found something you might wanna read." Gavin's hand shook as he handed a piece of paper to the girl before him. Raising a brow, she took it and opened the paper to see some words scribbled in leaking black ink.

'TWO MORE, Y/N' Heart in her throat, she felt her legs wobble beneath her. Gavin was quick to wrap an arm around her waist, keeping her upright as she shook in his arms. "I'm involved...?"

"This is personal," Gavin states as Nines nods. "Is there any correlation between you, Alice, and Gemma?"

"We..." She felt ill, looking down at the floor, "We were all involved with you, Gavin..."

Gavin's grip on the girl loosened as he inhaled sharply, looking away. Nines gave a concerned look to Gavin before turning to Y/n, returning to his stoic nature, "Perhaps we should give Detective Reed a moment outside to take everything in? We can investigate while he does so."

Gavin was silent, his hands shaking ever so slightly. Y/n was also inaudible, not knowing what to say about the possible cause of these deaths. A second or so had passed before Gavin left without a word, not letting the two see his face. Nines gently pushed the female detective, moving her towards the crime scene where she snapped back to reality and began to investigate, searching everywhere for a drop of evidence.

"The death occurred in a house where the walls are noise-proof. The neighbours wouldn't have heard a thing. The windows were sealed shut and there was no sign of a break-in."

"No sign of a break-in?"

"No. I believe that this was a setup. Gemma was fooled by someone close to her or an old friend and they attacked when she least suspected."

"This is really important!" Turning to an officer, she ordered information from the phone on any messages or contacts of importance. Nines was standing by the door when Y/n approached, a grin on her face, "Nines, you're amazing! With this, we could crack the case on this whole thing before any more killings happen!"

Nines gave a small almost unnoticeable smile at her enthusiasm, leading the girl out towards the car where Gavin stood leaning against it. Grey eyes looked up at the approaching detectives, a cautious tone recognized in his posture. "Well? Did you find anything?"

Y/n gave a smile, "There was no sign of a break-in."

"Holy shit, you're saying that it was a set-up?"

"Yes. We're getting intel on Gemma's phone as we speak. We should have the information by 5:30." Nines explained. Nodding, he unlocked the car for the three to get in. The drive back was filled with Y/n spouting theories from family members to coworkers to neighbours. Gavin listened intently, pretending like he wasn't by not saying anything, simply staying quiet and listening.

He loved her voice.

Gripping the wheel tightly, he remembered the note that was left. Unsettling handwriting that was hardly legible, screaming three words in their faces: Y/n was involved. Y/n was being targeted as well. Y/n was a motive.

Y/n was a motive...?

...

Wait...

"Gavin?"

Flinching at the warm feeling on his cold hand, he looked over at the girl beside him who was looking at him with confusion.

"What..?"

"Gavin, are you okay? You look completely out of it."

"I'm..." Looking at the hand that was placed on his own, her thumb rubbing his knuckles, he looked back out the windscreen, "I'm just tired."

Y/n is the motive.
