i walk up to martin, "hey, i hope i'm not too late," i say, watching him as he outs a cardboard box on the table. "you're right on time," he says, smiling, "just keep her distracted while we get everything ready," he says, placing a hand on my shoulder. "you got it," i say, smiling and walking to may, who was checking off stacks of cardboard boxes. "hey! there's my favorite aunt," i say, making may turn around. "there's my favorite niece!" she says, smiling. "need some help?" i ask. "yeah, sure! there's some heavy boxes-" i cut her off, quickly stepping in front of her to block the view of people hanging up a sign that said 'THANK YOU! FOR 5 YEARS OF SERVICE' as she turns around. "no! no- no! i mean- i mean, not yet," i distract, subtly turning her back around to face her back to the sign.
she gives a confused look. "i came to uh- to uh, talk," i say. "okay..." she trails off, guiding me by the shoulder and sitting me on the wooden bench, back still facing the sign as she stands opposite me. "y/n... what's going on?" she asks. "uh..." i try and think of something to say. "is this about olivia? did you guys break up?" she assumes with a concerned face. "no, liv and i are still together," i say, remembering our six month anniversary a few days ago, a smile forming on my face. "oh good, that's amazing," she says, smiling proudly. "yeah, yeah it is. but um... i just wanted to say thank you," i say, smiling, "you've always been here for me, through everything. i'm really grateful to have you here, and i'm sure everyone here is really grateful for you working here... sacrificing so much and asking for nothing," i say, smiling, "i just wish there were more people in the world like you." i say, trying my hardest not to look at martin pushing a cart with a cake on it, a few others behind him.
"she's right," martin says, making may turn around. she stands up, walking to him. "five years ago, you walked in her and told me you were inspired by my mission to help others. now it's you who inspires me." martin says, smiling. i stand up too, watching may. "thank you may, for everything." martin thanks, "here's to many more years of service!" we all clap, and may looks at me, smiling.
i walk up to martin, who was staring at a picture of him working in the kitchen. "thanks again for setting this all up," i say. "oh, i just wish i could do more," he says. "well, may's always told me, if you help someone..." "you help everyone." martin finishes my sentence, pointing at me with a chuckle.
1 YEAR LATER , olivia's pov
"can you stop being so protective of me?!" i raise my voice at y/n. "i'm not being protective, i just care about you! you can't say that when damn break in happened literally across the street from you!" she yells back, running her hands through her hair. "if you cared about me, you would know i'm capable of taking care of myself!" "oh my god, you don't think i care about you?! has this thing between us not meant anything?!" "oh, this thing?! you can't even put a label on us! we've been dating for almost 2 years!" "because you're embarrassed of being with me in public! have you not noticed it?!"
it wasn't because i'm embarrassed of y/n. i know how she feels about attention around her, she hates it. multiple paparazzi have come up to us this past year, rumours sparking around us. she tenses up, forgets about what's going on in the world and keeps doing whatever she's doing- hell, she almost got ran over, thank god for her spider senses.
"i'm not embarrassed of you-" " then why do you always act like you barely know me whenever a fan comes up to you?!" "because i know how you feel about this shit! you get mad at me for not caring enough about you but you get mad for me caring too much! what more do you want? maybe you should've thought about it before dating me! i get no privacy y/n! have you thought about what i'm going through?! maybe you're just not thinking about me! you don't care about anyone!" i glare at y/n, crossing my arms as we stand opposite each other in the living room of my apartment. luckily, iris wasn't home.
y/n scoffs, snapping. "are you fucking with me?! do you know who i am? i save people as a living, olivia! god, i've been doing this since i was 15! when i was out risking my life every night, other teenagers were having the time of their lives! i'd barely make it back to aunt may's apartment, and it used to hurt so much i couldn't tell her i was almost dying! you don't know how stressful this is for me even though i love what i do, but i suck it up! it's not all rainbows and unicorns being spider-woman!" "yet you don't pay attention to anyone you actually care about! did i not mean anything to you?" "don't bullshit with me olivia, you know i care about you! isn't this what this is all about?! aren't i being too protective?!" she yells, doing air quotes around 'too protective'. "can you just fuck off?! i don't care about you!" i blurt out before thinking, immediately regretting my words.
i study y/n's eyes as she stares sharply into mine. judging by the a pained expression on her face, i know what she was about to say wasn't good. "listen... this clearly isn't gonna work between us. our lives are so different." y/n settles the argument with a mutter, looking around my apartment. "i think it's best if we break up." i can see tears brimming in her eyes just as they are in mine.
we stare at each other for a few more seconds, before she breaks the eye contact, looking down. "i'll just be that girl you see when you're swinging, or the girl you listen to on the radio, nothing more." i say, pressing my lips together. i look at her, y/n's eyes failing to meet mine.
she starts walking to my balcony door. "i'll see you- um..." she breaks off, shaking her head as she looks at the door, unlocking it. "whenever, i guess." her nanotech suit comes on, and i lean against the door, watching as she jumps onto the balcony. without looking back, she drops off the railing.
y/n's pov
i knock on happy's door, taking out my phone while i wait. i go to the camera app, flipping the camera towards me. "oh my god," i say, wiping the tears off my red face. the door swings open, and i look up, placing my phone back in my pocket. "come in y/n," she says softly, hand going to my back as i walk in.
i sit on the couch, taking a deep sigh after spilling everything out. "i was too harsh on her," i admit, shaking my head at my stupid actions. "you weren't... you were just scared to lose her." i look up at may, shrugging. "but that's what's good about a broken heart. when you're looking at it all broken and shattered on the floor, you figure out the pieces you need verses the ones you liked. if you're ready to move on, that is," may says. i think about what she just said. "if..." i mumble.
she stands up from the couch beside me, sitting next to me. her arm drops around my neck, pulling her closer to me. i lean into her, closing my eyes as tears fall down my cheek once again. "you'll find someone better y/n, or maybe fate will lead you back to her if it was really meant to be." she rubs my back, then moving my hair out of my face. "i love you, may." she chuckles, and i look up at her. "what's so funny?" i ask. "nothing... i know. you tell me everyday y/n, i love you too," she says teasingly. i smile, leaning back into her.
