Chapter 2

Wheeler

It was the next day.

I pulled up to the side door as Mike had instructed me, checking my watch to make sure I was on time. The championship game was tonight but I didn't bother going. Wasn't really my scene. Nancy, however, was on school newspaper duty so that left me to pick Mike up from his DnD game in another part of the school.

They had clearly gone over in their session, and Mike mentioned earlier that they might go over even more. I thought about going home, but figured it would be just my luck if I left and THEN they finished.

I sighed as I opened the door and stepped out into the chilly air, goosebumps crawling up my arms. I shuttered as I opened the back of the van, reaching down to grab my spare blanket and my guitar which was cozily wrapped inside its case. I set my guitar down gently as I wrapped my blanket around my shoulders and shut the trunk. I carried my guitar to the front of my van, and climbing on top of my hood, I pulled out my guitar from the case.

"Long time." I sighed. I hadn't really picked it up much since I lost the spot of lead guitarist in Corroded Coffin. I would only pull it out if I was bored or to make sure I was never rusty.

I moved my headphones over my ears and removed the tape from my walkman, replacing it with the brand new Metallica tape. I pressed play and listened to the first few minutes of track 2, listening intently to the notes. I quickly made sure my guitar was tuned before I started playing along, messing around with chords and notes. Once I figured I'd got the hang of it, I removed my headphones and tried on my own.

As I played the basic chords I looked up to see Steve's car pulling up on the other side of the patch of grass. I saw him wave through the window and I nodded in return, my hands still focused on my playing.

I began to play the one note progression, slipping up a few times but finally getting it. I smiled as I continued to play on, tapping my foot to the tempo.

"Oi, mouse!" I heard Mike calling from the door, running towards to car. "I have an early ass flight tomorrow, start the car!"

I rolled my eyes as I gently placed my guitar in its case, hopping off the hood of my car to grab my AMP.

"Knowing you and the boys I thought I was gonna be here for a while, sorry" I said trying to rush.

I looked over towards Steve's car where I saw Dustin and Erica climbing in, and a few feet away from it was Eddie Munson, looking my way.

I cocked my head slightly, waiting to see what he was staring at. His hands were in his pockets and he just watched as I zipped my guitar case and removed my walkman from my neck. I gave up on waiting and climbed into the drivers seat, starting the car.

"What's your friend staring at?" I ask my brother.

"Why are you concerned? Just drive." I shifted out of park and took his advice, pulling out of the driveway. I couldn't help but look in the rear view to see Eddie glancing back where my van had been once more before walking away.
