Chapter 18

Wheeler

We reached home, the door swinging open without difficulty. It was dark inside, the walls covered in slime and vines.

"Maybe you should get a maid, Nance." Steve joked. Nancy raced up the stairs, not answering and we all followed suit. We all wandered into Nancy and I's room, looking around at the bleakness of it all.

"This your room, Wheeler?" Eddie laughed, picking up cassette tapes and reading them. He snorted.

"Dancing Queen? Really?? I thought you were a Journey girl." I snatched the cassette tape from him.

"Where did you find that??" he shrugged.

"It was just sitting right there." I stared at it. I hadn't listened to ABBA since...

"That's not guns." Robin said quietly. Eddie and I glanced over at Robin and Nancy as they stared at a box of heels.

"Nancy didn't you get rid of those ages ago?" she nodded.

"My guns were here. I swear..." she glanced around, picking up flash cards on the desk. I wandered over to my bedside table, picking up my journal. It was nearly empty. The last entry...

Dear Diary,

Steve kissed me today-

I shut the book closed as Eddie read over my shoulder. He couldn't tell if he'd read anything out of it.

"What? What was that?" he asked, taking it from me. He opened it up to the last entry.

"No-please don't-" his eyes scanned it for a moment before his eyes flickered up to mine. He handed it back to me, his expression unreadable.

I opened it back up to the page to keep reading.

Steve kissed me today for the first time. It was perfect. He said tonight he wants to come over and take the next step.

Sighing, I read the date at the top of the page, and made sure I wasn't imaging that it was the last time I'd written in it.

"That's not right...this journal should be full." Eddie shrugged.

"So?" like he was relieved I didn't write about when Steve had come over. I remembered that night well, though.

I turned to Nancy.

"The last entry is from 1983. On the day Will went missing." she snatched it from me and I rolled my eyes. People really needed to stop reading my diary.

"I think we're in the past."

"The past?" Eddie repeated, clearly not believing her.

"DUSTIN!" we heard Steve yelling from downstairs. Robin waisted no time running out of the room and down the stairs, and we all followed.

"DUSTIN!"

"Steve what the hell are you-"

"It's Henderson, the little shit is here! DUSTINNNNN!" we all stared at him, waiting for an explanation. "Can't you hear him?? Listen!" we waited. Nothing.

"What's that?" I asked. Everyone turned to see what I was looking at. The chandelier in the dining room was glowing. Little fibers like fireflies floated around the lights, illuminating the room. We all wandered over to it like moths, reaching up to feel it.

"It's beautiful." I chuckled.

"Yeah." Eddie whispered in return. We all played with the lights as they moved with our fingertips.

"Does anyone know morse code?" Nancy asked. There was silence.

"Does SOS count?" Eddie asked. We all looked at him. "Is that good?"
