Chapter 27

Wheeler

1 hour later...

It suddenly hit me that I was in the Upside Down. But how? Not through a gate. Maybe I'd fallen asleep. Maybe it was a dream. I was standing outside of Hawkins Middle School, right by the entrance door. I pulled on the handle. It was unlocked. I walked through the mossy halls, hearing music coming from somewhere near. The gym? I wandered aimlessly, forgetting why I was there. Until I heard someone yelling my name. Eddie? It was impossible. I turned to see him running down the hall with a shield in one hand and a spear in the other.

"Eddie?" I called. He made no answer, dropping his weapons to the ground once he reached me to wrap his arms around me. I hugged him tighter than he did me, as I was convinced I'd never see him again.

"What are you doing here?? Where's Dustin?"

"He's fine." Eddie said, breaking the hug. "I just needed to come find you."

"Why?" I asked. My head was ringing, and I couldn't help but notice a faint ticking sound.

"I'm buying us more time." Eddie's voice echoed. It hadn't before. Was it deeper? "I didn't want to disappear without saying goodbye." I came back to my senses when he said that.

"Wait-"

"Listen to me...I want you to be happy." He steadied my head as I shook it, taking it in his hands. "I love you so much." My heart dropped to my stomach.

"You what?" He pressed his lips to mine in a hurried goodbye.

His lips were cold.

When he broke it he gave me one last glance before picking up his weapons and disappearing around the corner. I felt a lump in my throat, not able to speak or scream him name. And when I blinked, suddenly the world went black.
