Chapter 24
Wheeler
Steve pulled up to the War Zone, and we all piled out of the RV, and through the front doors. The dirty looks we received as we walked in made me chuckle. A bunch of filthy teenagers wandering around the store was cause for such looks.
I wandered down the aisle of bullets, checking random tags. However, my mind was elsewhere. I turned to see Eddie had followed me down the aisle. He was staring at me.
"I think we should talk." he said, staying where he was. I didn't answer, my heart pounding. I knew we would have to talk about it sooner or later. I saw him walk up to me out of the corner of my eye, and he continued to talk.
"Steve told me. About all your relationships." I snapped my head to look at him, my eyebrows furrowed.
Damn you, Harrington.
"That wasn't his story to tell."
"Well, Wheeler, he told me." I looked away, pretending to read the back of a pack of bullets. "Look, I know you're pushing me away because of them but-"
"That's really what you think?" I asked, turning to him again. "Steve doesn't know shit. He may have been one of them, but that doesn't mean he knows ME." Eddie stared, blinking a few times before I continued. "I'm not trying to push you away, Munson I just need time to think."
"About what?"
"I'm sorry?"
"About. What?" he said slowly. "Does you pushing me away have anything to do with him? Or with them?" I shook my head slowly. I felt his hand grip my arm and suddenly we were walking. He guided me to a door that said EMPLOYEES ONLY and burst inside, shutting the door behind us. I moved my back to the nearest wall as he flipped on the light and tossed his jacket to the ground. He began pacing in the small space, looking up at me occasionally.
"You're giving me mixed signals here, Wheeler." he said. "Explain this to me." he gestured between us.
"We're friends." I shrugged. My eyebrows furrowed when he laughed.
"We're friends?" I nodded as he laughed again. My heart raced as he stepped closer to me, his hand raising to rest on the wall behind my head. He leaned into me, his eyes searching my face.
"We're not friends." he breathed, his eyes rising to mine slowly. My breath hitched as he traced my forearm with his fingers, sending tingles up my spine. He leaned into me more, and brushed his lips against my ear.
"Tell me to stop." he said deeply, his hand moving to my waist. "Tell me you don't want this." I shook my head without thinking, my eyes closing at his touch. I felt him move away to find him meeting my eyes once more. "You want this?" I nodded, again, without thinking. The need to have him close was overpowering my rational thinking. I told myself he wasn't like Billy. He wasn't like Steve or Tommy.
As his lips brushed lightly against mine I closed my eyes, waiting.
"WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?" we jumped apart as Erica slammed the door open. "WE HAVE TO GO!" she rushed off, leaving us alone once more. Eddie bent down to pick up his jacket. When he looked up at me from the ground with hooded eyes I immediately let out the breath I'd be holding. He smirked as he stood, his nose practically brushing up against my shirt. He rose until he towered over me once more, his eyes on mine.
"Are we okay?" he asked carefully. I nodded with a small smile. He gave me another smirk and turned on his heel, following where Erica disappeared around the corner.
He was right.
We're in deep shit now.
