Chapter 14
Wheeler
"Turn off your flashlights!" was the first thing Eddie and I heard when we left the back room. He no longer lingered close to me. I wanted to say something, but I knew if I did he'd dismiss it. We all complied, switching off our lights and waiting for whatever it was they'd discovered.
"Holy shit-" Eddie cut off, his flashlight illuminating. "I didn't do that." he said, looking up at Steve.
"Exactly. Do you remember Joyce's Christmas lights?" everyone except for Max, Eddie and Robin replied "yes" in unison. "They lit up when Will contacted her from the Upside Down. I think this means someone's here. On the other side." we all looked around at each other, pondering the thought.
"Now for the cool part." Dustin cut in, walking towards the stairs. His flashlight lit up, flickering slightly. We all followed as he wandered up the stairs, his flashlight remaining illuminated. We followed him all the way up to the basement, where we found more cobwebs and clutter. Dustin demonstrated that his flashlight only remained illuminated in the center of the room.
"He's here. Vecna." I swallowed as I felt a brush against my finger, looking down to find Eddie's hand once again close to mine. I wouldn't blame him if he were afraid. I was too. I watched his pinky reach out, as if to wrap around mine, but he pulled away when Dustin spoke again.
"I think this is his lair or something."
"Then why are we still here??" Erica asked.
We all left the house, piling into the car, talking the whole way. What did this mean?
What could we do?
Max was running out of time.

"Steve, turn left!" Dustin yelled, making us all jump.
"What??"
"LEEEEEFT!" we all screamed as Steve cut the wheel, turning sharply to the left. Lucas was crushed against me as we were all forced to lean with the car, turning onto a dirt road.
"Go to lovers lake." we all looked at Dustin, his eyes on his compass.
"May I ask why??" Steve inquired, the car shaking on the bumpy side road.
"Gate." was all he answered. My mind shot to the time when Dustin forced Steve and I along on his trek to find Dart. He had explained to us both the electromagnetic field theory, in that his compass pointed to gates to the Upside Down.
"We're nowhere near the lab." I interjected.
"What if..." Dustin turned to me from the passenger seat, handing me his compass. "There's another gate. It would have to be much smaller, but-"
"It's possible." Lucas added, taking it from me.
"Lovers lake?" I asked, my eyes darting to Eddie, then back to Dustin.
"Lovers lake."
