London has been my home for over a month. And apart from always looking to the wrong side of the street before crossing it, life has been surprisingly easy.
My internship is exactly what I expected and more. Living with Andrew turned out to be natural. From the day I arrived here I got that feeling I landed exactly where I was supposed to be.
And to be honest, they do write on the asphalt the right side to check before crossing the street, it is my fault that I'm usually daydreaming and forget to look down.
"How was the visit?" My boss, Alistair, asked me as soon as I entered his office. This last week, for the first time, I visited the wind farm offshore we are building. I spent some days there following the construction and came back this morning straight to work.
If I had any doubt I had chosen the right domain after everything I've learned, that would confirm it.
"Great," I grin and take the seat in front of him to chat about it.
"You did?" He takes his glasses off and stares at me. I enjoy how light the relationship boss-employer works here.
"Of course," I grin wilder.
"By the ladder?" I nod, opening my phone to show him the proof. The pictures of me climbing the ladder of a wind turbine.
When they told me I could go up there to check the nacelle, I didn't hesitate, I jumped at the opportunity. Even if I was a bit scared of how high it was, almost 200 meters above the ocean, the experience was priceless. And the view.
"Damn, you look too happy for someone in danger."
"I wasn't in real danger. I had the safety line, I wouldn't fall."
"If I had any doubt that I hired the right person for this internship, that would've changed it." He laughs. Then he raises his eyes from my phone and looks at me.
"I'm very happy with your work here. In one month you showed to be adept and autonomous. That's rare."
I nod, suddenly shy, containing the grin that wants to form on my face. Is always good to see your efforts being recognized.
"But I prefer to be honest since the beginning, to avoid any confusion later."
I straighten myself in the chair, seriousness took over the amusing atmosphere in a second.
"I can't hire you." This time, I bite my cheek to contain the disappointment from showing.
"And is not because I don't want to. I would be pleased to have you on my team."
I give him a small smile.
"Despite the process to hire being long and complicated, I would be happy to do it. But the fact that you need a visa to work is a blocking point, unfortunately."
"I'm telling you this now because you might want to continue in the domain and in England. If that's the case, I advise you to search for a job right away. It's rare to hire someone at the beginning of their career who needs a work visa."
"Ok," I say as calmly as I can. I love the internship here, I would love to stay and work with them. The feedbacks I've received so far were so good, that I was hopeful. "Thank you for the advice," I tell him before leaving his office.
Things were going great and on a good pace. I haven't thought about what will happen after my internship. If I will stay in London or come back to the US. I came a month ago and was planning to see where things go. Let it happen naturally. But now... now a door just closed in my face.
