You were no fan of the dark. Not at all. You HATED it, to say the least. It made you feel as if your every move was being watched with judgement laced into the unknown eyes causing the eerie feeling.
So, of course, you were pissed when you opened a room only to be greeted with complete and utter darkness.
You grab the lighter from your back pocket and fidget with it for a few seconds, the flame flickering endlessly, until it finally held up and illuminated some light. You held the lighter in front of you and slowly walked forward.
Sadly, the lighter wasn't that bright, but it was better than nothing. You quickened your pace, walking straight ahead, not breaking your stride.
You stared straight ahead intensely, all of your attention fixated on your surroundings and your hearing. Why?
Well, because of-
"Psst!"
That. Because of that.
You quickly spun around. You were met with an... unexpected sight, to say the least. Usually, there is just a tentacle peeking out the dark that disappears when you see it. But this time? You were met with piercing eyes staring right back at you.
Small, white pupils, all the more terrifying, staring at you. It seems as if the colors were inverted. Where the whites of the eyes should be were replaced with black, and the small pupils were as white as day. Though, the eyes seemed to be outlined by a hint of white, shaping them.
The person had mocha skin, which seemed the glow in the light of the lighter. Though, where their 'face' was located, the skin smoothly faded to a pitch black in the middle of their neck, and the face was blackened out. Of course, though, there was a poorly drawn, long line that formed an eerie smile which reached from mid-cheek to mid-cheek. They had a black, sleeveless turtleneck on with some black, fingerless gloves that reached just below their elbows. Also, their fingers, not just the fingernails, were slightly pointy.
The had black (AGAIN) techwear pants, accompanied by white straps, with a belt securing the pants in place. Black tactical boots with white outsoles and below painted onto them.
It had white, shaggy hair, in a wolfcut-like style. It looked... soft. And fluffy.
It also had what looked to be black, goo-covered tentacles protruding from its back.
But you didn't care about any of the attractive appearance this thing had going it. You were fucking terrified.
You, out of pure instinct, swung your free hand (Which just so happened to be your dominant hand) right into the void-like face of the creature. The thing stumbled back, grunting in pain, and you heard a thud. Then silence.
Your blood was rushing in your ears, pumping quickly. Your fear kept you frozen for a few seconds before you slowly stepped forward, making sure to keep your footsteps light. Your lighter's emitting glow outlined a body sitting on the ground, supporting itself with one hand on the ground while the other held its face. You froze.
And you stayed frozen, just as the figure did, for what felt like eternity, before there was a quiet dripping sound.
Then, you heard a voice mumble, "Stupid Player, stupid lighter, stupid punch.. My damn nose.."
You crouched down beside the figure and illuminated their face. You knew damn well that you'd most likely get killed, but you didn't care. You had the opportunity to see what a monster looks like, for crying out loud!
Though, when you looked at its face, the creatures hand was bloody, holding where you assume the nose is, because there was blood dripping out from there. The monster, just from the look of its eyes, didn't look too happy. But it did look kind of funny, you had to admit, because of the drawn-on mouth.
Well, it DID look funny. It didn't when the pupils of the creature looked at you without turning its head. God, that was terrifying. You both stared at each other for a few seconds before the creature spoke. Its voice sounded like that of a 17-year-old male.
"I'm giving you five seconds before I rip your head off."
You didn't need to think twice. You quickly hopped up and ran the way you were going. You saw the door and quickly opened it. Was that five seconds? 'Guess not, since the creature didn't attack you.
Since the light flooded into the dark room, you looked back into the room, and the creature was still staring at you. Suddenly, you remember the bandage you packed. You reached into the pocket of your backpack and pulled out the bandage. You didn't know if this would help (obviously not), but you got it anyways. As soon as you pulled it in front of you, it sort of... molded.. into tissues..?
You tossed the packet of tissues towards the creature. The small packet landed right in front of the thing, and it stared at the packet for a few seconds. Then it looked at you, then the packet, then back at you again. It brought up a hand, motioned at the packet of tissues, then itself.
"For me?", the thing asked. You could hear the suspicion dripping from each and every word. You nodded in response, too nervous to form even a word. You didn't dare make a sound.
The eyes of the creature slightly narrowed, and the smiling mouth drawn elevated slightly as well. It was... smiling? The creature took the packet and ripped it open with one swift motion and stuffed a few tissues around the bleeding area, slightly cleaning its hand in the process.
This was a bit awkward, so you managed to form a coherent sentence. "Uh.. Sorry for, y'know, punching you. I just got really freaked out", you spoke in a slightly hushed tone.
The creature looked up, its eyes slightly wider. It spoke in a giddy voice, "So you can speak! Man, Player, I thought you were mute! Also, don't worry about it. I'd throw hands too if I were you."
You were slightly taken aback by how quickly the thing talked- Thing? You just remembered that you didn't know this creature's name. "Hey, uh.. What's your name? If you have one, that is", you asked. Your nerves were slightly eased by giddy response the thing gave you, but you didn't want to push your luck.
The creature seems slightly stunned by your answer, but shook it off. "My name is Screech, but you can call me something else if you'd like. What's your name?"
You had to force yourself to push back a smile. You can't get even remotely attached to anything or anyone here. "My name is, uh..." Shit. You just now realized that you don't know your name. How did you forget your name? You're not THAT insane and lost yet, right?
Screech stares at you expectantly, waiting for an answer, before putting two-and-two together and sitting up straighter.
"Player... Do you not remember your own name?"
"..No. I don't- I-"
"Hey, hey, calm down. It's a first, yeah, every other guest we've had remembered their name, but don't worry! We can just keep calling you Player or a nickname until you figure it out, no worries."
Screech spoke in a surprisingly soft tone for someone who threatened to steal your head right off of your neck a moment ago. You processed those words carefully. After a moment, you spoke. "I'll try to remember it. Maybe by looking at things that'll trigger a memory or something. But, uh, yeah. Player will do for now, I guess."
Screech nodded in response before motioning with their hand.
"Go, Player. You can't linger here for too long. Plus, I gotta deal with my nose."
"Alright, alright. One last question, though. What is every, uh... 'person', here? Gender wise."
Screech stared at you, as if processing your words, before speaking.
"I'm a guy. Seek is a guy. Figure is whatever the heck they are, I can't tell and they don't understand the whole spectrum thingy. Jack is a guy, obviously. Halt is, what I assume, a girl. Like Figure, I can't tell. Timothy, is, well, Timothy. I never bothered to ask a spider for its gender. Glitch... I don't know about Glitch. Eyes is pretty much nothing. Hide is a guy. I had a not-so-pleasant encounter with him, so I would know. Ambush is an.. Uh.. Like a half guy or something? I don't know, but they told me that. So yeah, I don't question what people wanna be. Shadow is just, well, a shadow. No gender or anything. And the window person is the same. Rush is, if you couldn't tell, a guy too."
You nodded, barely understanding Screech as he talked so damn quick. You shut the door, looking into the normal-looking room you were in.
