This story takes place in southern Mississippi in the early 1960s during the civil rights movement. It is a story using accurate details from history. Therefore half fiction and half nonfiction.
There will be mentioning of injustice, racial slurs, attempted sexual assault, and abuse.
If any of those will be triggering to you, please do not read it.Here is a rundown about the characters:
Annie Moore:
A 20 year old black girl in one of very rare happy homes. Her father works at a mill and makes good money so Annie herself and her brother are both well educated and well spoken but don't show it unless they're speaking to strangers or important people. You can imagine her shade however you like, but she is a black woman regardless. Contrary to the book cover, I write Annie to have straightened hair but I wanted it to be clear that she is a black woman so on the cover she has a fro. She is beautiful, with a perfect smile, just like her parents and very kind.Sirius Moore:
A family man. Annie's father. He is a tall black man with a family all the other men are envious of. He is known for being very handsome and was nicknamed 'Black Beauty' for his perfect, dark brown, and even complexion, striking smile, and kind heart. He is hardworking and occasionally, when he's free, Annie reads him books since he himself is not educated but likes the idea of learning.Diana Moore:
A housewife and nanny. Annie's mother. She is a stunning woman with pretty eyes and an even prettier smile. If the nickname 'Beauty' wasn't already given to Sirius before they met Diana, she would own the title. She has a full frame and head full of long, thick, straightened hair as well. While all the men are envious of Sirius, all the women are envious of Diana. She's the best cook on the street and occasionally cooks enough to feed everybody. This happens mostly on Sundays when they're getting home from church. During the weekdays, Diana works as a nanny in a white home. For the mayor. She'd taken care of his home and his son for the past decade and a half. The son is a fully grown man by now.Marshall Moore:
A 21 year old smart boy who's strong enough to pull a carriage of lumber wood. Annie's older brother. Marshall was popular in high school because all the girls had a crush on him and all the boys wanted to be his best friend. Marshall is kind contrary to what his exterior may seem and he often helps his father with the yard work. He's protective over his dainty, pretty, little sister and his beautiful mother. His father always taught him to protect those two. Sirius taught Marshall that the day will come where Sirius is no longer around and it could happen at a time too soon. So Marshall needed to already know how to protect the women in his life before it was too late. And Marshall never forgot that.Daniel Ross:
Daniel is the 23 year old son of the mayor. He's a white man and has brown hair and blue eyes. He's taller than most of the people in the city he grew up in at 6'3 and he's strong. A lot of girls like Daniel but he claims he has high standards. He's smart but chooses to show he isn't because he's afraid people won't take him seriously. This idea came once he saw all of the smart kids get bossed around when he was in school. Book smart people aren't as intimidating as the stupid ones, is what he thinks. Daniel is outside more than he's in his home. He doesn't typically like it there so most of the time he's just driving around in his truck and looking for things to do. He works at a mechanic shop with his friends. And just like most white kids born in the late 1930s, Daniel believes black people are far inferior to him.
But he wouldn't tell that to his nanny. Then she wouldn't make him apple pie anymore.Stephen Ross:
The mayor of the town. Daniel's father. He's recently become a relatively fluffy man, thanks to Diana's delicious meals, and he comes with grey hair that's always combed out of his face and green eyes. Stephen is a decent height at just 6 feet even which often makes him wonder where Daniel got his height from. He isn't a bigoted man. Stephen is very educated and has never been one to understand the country's disdain for colored people. Although he's nice to others, he doesn't like his family very much, but being a mayor that's married with a good kid is good show for the civilians as he's been told. While Mayor Ross doesn't shy away from hitting his boy like he caught him stealing, and patronizing, pushing, and disrespecting his wife like she's a nuisance, once the population can see, he kisses their heads and hugs them tightly like they're his greatest gift.
But his eyes are on only one woman in particular. A woman he couldn't be seen with because the state as a whole would have a panic. So he keeps his thoughts to himself.Nancy Ross:
A housewife who doesn't really look after the house. Daniel's mother. She is the bigot of the family and passed those traits down to her son. Stephen thinks it's strange she can carry the hatred in such a small frame. With blonde hair, blue eyes, and in a 5'5 body, she's taught Daniel all there was to know about black people in her point of view. She called them animals, savages, dumb, good for nothing, and spits on their cars if she can find one. She also hates Diana and tries to bother her every time she goes over to clean. It never works. Diana is too kindhearted and patient. That's all for now. Other characters who are introduced are just side characters and will be partially described when they appear.
I hope you enjoy. <3
