The next morning, the Moore family woke up bright and early to go to the hospital.

Once dressed, they hopped in the car and drove off.

"Do you think he's okay?" Annie asked from the backseat.
"We'll hope so." Diana replied.

The ride continued and in no more than thirty minutes, they arrived.

"Visiting?" asked the receptionist.
"Yes. Johnny Wilkes." Diana replied.
"One second."

Annie paced in the waiting room with her fingers twiddling, scared of what doctors might say about the condition Johnny was in.

"Come on, y'all." Diana called.
Annie rushed behind.

"Mama, I'm scared." Annie stated.
"He'll be just fine, baby girl. Don't you worry."

They found his door and saw it was already open with the Wilkes family sitting inside.

"Hey there..." Sirius greeted.
"Aw hey." said Mr. Robert.
Both men shook hands.

"How is he?" Annie asked and looked at Johnny. He laid there, sleeping, with a burn mark scar on his forehead and a purple eye.
Ms. Katherine tried gathering herself before she could answer.
Mr. Robert put his hand on her shoulder to let her know he'd handle it. "He's in a coma. Something about a severe head injury."
Ms. Katherine cried harder.

"I'm sorry to hear that, Kathy." said Sirius.
"That's all right, Beauty. My boy's gon be alright. I'm cryin' but I still have hope." Ms. Katherine nodded.
"And you keep that hope alive." Diana replied. She and Ms. Katherine held hands.

Annie walked up to Johnny and took his hand.
Her eyes watered slowly while she looked down at him.
"I'm sorry I couldn't stop them." she told him. "I would've if I could, I promise. You didn't deserve it."
"Don't you put that kind of pressure on yourself." Ms. Katherine spoke up. "Ain't your fault. It's those white devils that did that to my baby. Not you. You sat there with him for hours. You're alright. Don't blame yourself and I mean it."
Annie sniffed and nodded at Ms. Katherine.

Marshall walked to the other side of Johnny's bed.
"Quit messin' around, man. Wake up." Marshall commanded. "Very funny, you can wake up now."
Johnny laid dormant.
Marshall let his head fall in sadness.

Annie wanted to thank Daniel for bringing Johnny to the hospital like he promised.

In reality, Daniel did the bare minimum of the request.

He made Johnny lay in the bed of his truck with a few of his work supplies.
He drove to the colored hospital, picked Johnny up, walked inside, and dropped him to the floor with the words: "He got beat up. Fix it."

Every negro inside stared at him as he walked out then they looked at Johnny on the floor and rushed to his aid.

Daniel did just enough in hopes that Annie didn't hate him anymore, but barely because he didn't care if Johnny lived or died.

He didn't even wake up with Johnny's health on his mind like everyone else did.
He wondered where Diana was and why she wasn't fixing breakfast.

When the Moore family finished their time at the hospital, Sirius dropped Diana off at work.

She walked inside and Daniel was already sitting there.

"Good morning, Mr-..."
"Where were you?" Daniel interrupted.
"Oh, I'm sorry for the tardiness. A friend of my children was in bad health and we went to visit him at the hospital. My daughter practically begged me to go."
"Your daughter?"
"Yes, sir. She really needed us to visit him and make sure he was alright."
Daniel looked away from her. "Alright. Fine. Just...start breakfast."
Diana nodded as Daniel walked off to find something to do.

"Alright, I'll see you two later this evenin'. Y'all don't go too far. Annie, you stay within three miles." Sirius instructed.
"Yes, sir. I promise."
"Good. If you need to go anywhere farther than that, you tell Marshall and he'll take ya. Ya hear me?"
"Yes, sir."
"Alright." He walked out of the front door to head to work.

"Who helped you get Johnny to the hospital?" Marshall asked.
"Well...I didn't really help. I took Johnny's car and came home after givin' it to his family."
"Then who did it?"
"...That white man you saw in the tulip field."
"What?"
"He saw me crying and he came to help. He walked me to Johnny's car and I made him promise to take Johnny to the hospital and he said he would."
"Annie, you don't speak to him!" Marshall yelled.
"Well he spoke to me first! I told him to leave us be and he told me he wouldn't hurt me. I didn't know what else to do, Johnny could've died had we stayed put any longer!"
"You don't let no white man anywhere near you! EVER! They're-...They're animals, Annie! And what if he would've lied?! They're killers, you think they ain't liars too!? He could've left Johnny for dead!"
"But he didn't..."
Marshall huffed. "Don't you do that no more. If he comes near you again then you run and you run fast."
"I couldn't run with Johnny asleep in my arms."
"That's why I said again. I'll let it slide this time 'cause you ain't have any other choice. But you stay away from him. I mean it."
"Alright. I will. I wasn't gon' see him again no way."
"Good."
"I'm going for a walk. I'll stay within three miles. I just wanna get some writing done," said Annie.
"Be back before the sun starts to set."
"Yes, I know."
She went to her room to grab her things then left the house.

She thought about finding a new lovely spot to write in. Since the tulip field was clearly out of the question. It was a shame to her, she'd gotten some of her best writing done while she was in that field.

She jumped when she heard a horn behind her.

A truck pulled up next to her and she looked at the man driving it.

"You need a ride?" Daniel asked, facing the road ahead.
"I told you about that." Annie replied and began walking again.
Daniel sighed and rolled his eyes before driving slowly next to her.
"That ain't stop you from gettin' in that guy's truck the last time." Daniel argued.
Annie paused.
"So it's just me that you don't wanna ride with?"
She looked at him. "That wasn't some random man and he also wasn't white. That man was my brother. He was trying to make sure I got to and from the store safely."

Daniel felt stupid.

"I brought your friend to the hospital." he stated to change the subject.
"I saw. I'm very grateful. Thank you." She began walking again.
Daniel sighed as his eyes stared at the ceiling of his truck.

"Son of a bitch..." he mumbled and pulled over to the side of the road.

He got out and jogged towards Annie. "Hey!" he called.
She turned around and stood there as he caught up.
"I'm not allowed to talk to you." she told him.
"I'm not allowed to talk to you neither."
"So then we're in agreement." She turned back around and began walking again.

Daniel paced in a circle, full of frustration and enchantment. He contemplated going back to his truck and getting inside.
Then he watched her walk away.
