Daniel arrived back home and slammed the door shut.
Diana flinched after hearing it while taking out the pie from the oven.
She walked out of the kitchen and flipped her towel over her shoulder.
"Everything alright?" Diana asked.Daniel looked at her in the kitchen doorway.
"A job I applied for wouldn't hire me." he stated.
"Did they say why?"
"They called me a traitor all because I was in that march a few weeks ago. What the hell does that have to do with the job?!"
Diana stared at Daniel. "What march?"
"Come on. The march me and Annie went to a few weeks ago. Didn't she tell you?"
"No." Diana lied.
Daniel knew she was lying. He wondered why she was so adamant on not accepting the truth.
"Well I went. Now they're punishin' me for it."
Diana removed the towel from her shoulder."Go wash up. Dinner's ready. Apple pie for dessert." she said and walked back into the kitchen.
Daniel watched her then headed upstairs to clean up.
He banged on his parents' bedroom door."NANNY SAID DINNER'S READY!" he exclaimed.
The bedroom door opened.
Nancy stood there.
Daniel was about to walk off."Who?" Nancy asked.
Daniel looked at her. "Who what?"
"Who said dinner's ready?"
"My nanny." Daniel said without stutter.
Nancy just stared at him.
"Anything else?"She left the room and headed downstairs.
Daniel continued walking to the bathroom to wash his hands.
"Diana." Nancy called as she walked into the kitchen.
"Yes, ma'am?"
"What have you done?"
"I'm sorry?"
"Why is my son calling you nanny?"
Diana tried to not show her confusion on her face.
"I'd have to say it's because I was hired to be a nanny..." Diana said as respectfully as possible.
"I don't want him calling you that. Your name is Diana."
"Well, ma'am, I had no control over his decision to call me nanny again. It's what his father told him to call me when he was young, and it seems like he's picked the habit back up again. I don't mind."
"I bet you don't. I don't care whether or not you mind."Diana stood there wondering how this became negatively reflected onto her.
"My son is not your son." Nancy clarified.
"I'm aware, Ms. Nancy."
"Mrs!"
It took strength for Diana to not roll her eyes. "Mrs. Nancy."
"My family is mine and you just work here. My son is not your son. He will not be calling you nanny."
"That's not what-..."
"I DON'T CARE!" Nancy shouted.
Diana took a deep breath.
"I better not hear it again."
Diana didn't respond. She had no intention of stopping Daniel from calling her nanny. She thought it was the beginning of her seeing that sweet little boy come back from years ago. She'd be lying if she said she didn't miss little Dan. He was so precious and helpful until Nancy caught on to Stephen's affair with Diana and turned Daniel against her. But he was finally coming back. He was slowly getting her to change her mind about him. If he could come back she'd know he was okay. But until then, and so long as Nancy still has a hand in Daniel's opinions, she wanted him away from her daughter.
Diana continued setting the table for dinner and Nancy took a seat.
The men came down next.
Diana placed the chicken and side dishes onto each plate then set them in front of the family.
"What can I get y'all to drink?" Diana asked kindly.
"Can I get a beer?" Stephen asked.
"You can." Diana replied and went to the fridge.
"You don't need beer." Nancy stated.
Stephen sighed.
Diana ignored her and grabbed a beer then cracked it open. She was about to walk to Stephen with the beverage until Nancy took it out of her hand and threw it into the sink.
"Did you not hear what I said?" Nancy questioned.
"Have you lost your fucking mind?!" Daniel asked.
"Excuse me?!" Nancy replied and looked at him.
"Can you sit down and not ruin a dinner for ONCE?! JUST ONCE?!"
Nancy scoffed then faced Diana again. She had nothing but discontent and anger written across her face. "You did this."
Diana just stood there.
"You're the reason they treat me this way." she muttered quietly.
"Mrs. Ross, I just wanted to get the man a drink like he asked." Diana replied.
"Water." Nancy commanded.
"Diana, just get me a water, please." Stephen decided.
Diana nodded then grabbed a cup.Daniel got up from his seat.
"What're you doing?" Nancy asked.
He went into the fridge and grabbed a beer. "You gonna throw this one too?" he asked as he walked back to the table.
He placed it down in front of his father. "I'll take the water, nanny."
Diana placed the cup of water down in front of Daniel. The room was filled with awkward tension as the men ate and Nancy sat there, embarrassed and with a lost appetite.
She got up from the table and walked away.
The men continued eating.
"Daniel..." Diana called.
He looked up from his plate.
"You have to stop calling me nanny." Diana said reluctantly.
"Why?"
"Your mother doesn't like it."He took the last bite of chicken on his plate then pushed it forward.
"Can I have another wing,...nanny?" Daniel asked.
The two held eye contact before Diana looked at his plate. She nodded then took it to the counter to fix more.Stephen looked at his son while Daniel just stared at the kitchen table.
