Around 5 years later:

"Hot as a burning furnace out there." Terry said as he walked into the mechanic lounge. He wiped his face with the small towel he kept hanging in his back pocket.

Three other men sat there talking as well.
Daniel, Joseph, and Buddy.
They were opening up their lunches.

"Whatcha got in there, Dan?" Joseph asked.
The men were always curious to see what he had since they usually ended up envious. There were two Daniels at this job. And ever since he and Annie moved to the state of Utah (which wasn't what they planned but Annie fell in love with a house there while they were traveling. And Daniel is adamant on giving her what she wants.) and he started his work there, they called him Lunch Dan to limit confusion. Because he was the one who always had the mouth watering lunches that his coworkers drooled over.
He pulled out his meal that was in a nice container.
"Steak sandwich with cheese. Bag of chips. And three chocolate chip cookies." Daniel said with pride.
The other men groaned.
"Need me a woman like yours." Buddy stated.
"Ain't no woman like mine." Daniel said as he opened his bag of chips and ate one.

Joseph turned up the lounge television as the men began to eat.

"In further news, Supreme Court ruling calls for legalized interracial marriage-..." Daniel's head lifted and faced the television while he was midchew. "...-In Nebraska and Uta-..."
Daniel jumped up and grabbed his jacket before running out of the building.
The men watched the door close and then looked at one another. Each of them was equally confused.
Buddy reached for the sandwich and took it.

Daniel was in his truck, mistakenly forgetting that he'd just left work three hours early and would be in trouble upon return.
His hands held the steering wheel tightly as he drove like a maniac through the street. He didn't know why he was rushing. He couldn't do his plan until later on in the evening anyway, but he was so excited he couldn't wait.

Soon, Daniel arrived at the jewelry store and went into the armrest of his truck. He found the piece of folded up paper he'd kept for a while now then ran inside.

"Afternoon. What can I do for you?" asked the clerk.
"I need a ring. This size. Looks just like this." He unfolded the paper quickly then placed it onto the glass casing.
The man stared at the drawing of the ring.
"You want a custom made ring?"
"I want anything that looks close to that. And I want it now. I got the money."
The man took the piece of paper then walked off to the back of the building.

Daniel stood there pacing and taking deep breaths. He couldn't believe it. His heart was racing. He almost thought he was dreaming.

The clerk came back into the lobby with two ring boxes in hand.
"Here's what I've got for you."
He placed them both down in front of Daniel and Daniel stared closely at them both.

"They're both the proper size?" he asked and looked at the clerk.
"That's right."
He looked back at the rings to think.

Annie sat at home after cleaning up and just flipped through her magazine.

The front door opened.
"Hi, my love, how was work?" she asked sweetly and flipped her page.
"It was fine. I need you to get dressed."
Annie turned and looked at him.
"In your best dress." he clarified.
"Are we going somewhere?"
Daniel was so happy she hadn't turned on the television. "We are. Now go get dressed."
Annie curiously got up and headed towards their bedroom.

He paced a bit more as he thought about his plan for the evening.

Annie found her best dress hanging in their closet. She wondered what Daniel was up to.

She slid the dress on and then headed to the bathroom to fix up her hair.
Daniel noticed she'd left the bedroom so he went in. He grabbed his clothes then headed to the guest bathroom to shower.

He'd kept a mental note of his plans for years and the day was finally here. He couldn't wait to see the look on her face.

Annie pinned up her hair, perfectly framing her face, then slipped on a bit of mascara and lipstick. She spritzed herself in her favorite perfume then twirled to make sure she loved her look.

As she stepped out of the bathroom, she wondered where Daniel was. How unlike him to get her dolled up and not be the first thing she saw when she walked out, ready to shower her in kisses and compliments.
She wondered if they were going on a date. Then again that didn't really happen often and when it did, he was much more gentle upon asking.
She walked back towards the living room to grab her magazine again.

Daniel finished up his shower and was now dressed. He adjusted his hair to his liking after trying two other styles. He was dressed in a nice shirt and slacks. His hair was brushed out of his face and he brushed his teeth again just for good measure.
He stepped out of the bathroom and wondered where Annie had gone.

He found her sitting down with her magazine and fully ready.
He chuckled. "Will you put that down?" he teased.
She looked at him. "I didn't know how long you'd take. They have really beautiful garden decor in here." she said and put the magazine on the coffee table.
He snickered, not surprised by what caught her eye in the magazine. "Well you look beautiful." he told her and walked closer.
"Thank you." she smiled. "You look handsome."
"I had to look like someone who deserved to be out on the town with you."
She snickered. "You always do."
"Well aren't you sweet?" he joked. He stood by her and held out his arm for her to take. She hooked hers into his and they headed for the exit.

"Where are we going?" she wondered.
"If I tell you, it ruins the surprise."
"I do like surprises." she said as he held the door open for her.
"So I've learned." The two left the house.
