Nancy walked into the police station with tears in her eyes.
The divorce hadn't been made public just yet and all of the officers recognized her as the mayor's wife.
"Ma'am, are you alright?" one asked and approached her.
"No!" Nancy said through tears. "He beat my brother and brother in law. He beat up my family! You do something about it right now!"
"Who, Mrs. Ross?"
"That nigga. A nigga beat up my family! And I know his name!" she said too happily. "Sirius Moore. He works at the mill in the next town over. He beat up my brothers. I want somethin' done about it."
"Yes, ma'am. We'll handle it as soon as possible."
"You give him the worst sentence you can or I'll tell my husband that you tried to protect a nigga over the mayor's family." Nancy grunted. "I want that boy dealt with. NOW!"
"Yes, ma'am!"Nancy walked out of the office with pride. Her spine was even straighter than usual with a smug look on her face after getting revenge on the colored woman who took everything away from her.
She adjusted her coat in the cool weather and continued on her way back to her sister's house, proudly.

"Everything alright?" Stephen asked as he walked into the kitchen where Diana was cleaning.
Diana stopped and took a deep breath.
"Still worried about them moving?"
"I don't know how I feel about my baby being that far away..." Diana turned and faced Stephen. The two looked at each other. "I knew she'd leave the house at some point but...hell, California? I don't know..."
"They're young. They've got big dreams." Stephen shrugged. "I'll be honest. The only reason I'm allowing it is because of how hard Daniel's working for it. If he didn't have this much passion and work ethic, I wouldn't have given him the house."
Diana looked at the floor.
"But I've never seen the boy get off his ass so willingly before. I think they'll be alright."Diana snickered to herself.
"What?" Stephen asked.
She sniffed and wondered why her eyes had begun to water.
"How silly is it that the son of the man I loved falls in love with my daughter?"
"Loved?" Stephen questioned.
"I don't like speaking in the present. Makes me feel like a bad wife."
Stephen knew what that secretly meant so it still made him happy."I'm jealous he's doing it right on the first try." Stephen spoke up.
Diana stared at him.
"How long are we gonna live like this?" she asked.
"Live like what?"
"In regret." she sniffed.
"Until we no longer regret it, but I can't see that happening for me anytime soon." Stephen stared at the floor. "It's been 24 years and I'm still regretting it. I got married and had a kid. I don't regret my kid, but..."
"Yea." Diana interrupted.
He lifted his head and looked at her.
"That makes us selfish doesn't it?" Diana asked.
"I'm learning from our kids that it's okay to be selfish. They'd be in pain if they weren't. I don't want that for them." Stephen answered.
Diana nodded."I love you." Stephen stated.
"I love you too." she replied."I know it was my fault. And I'm sorry I did that to you. I'm glad you found someone that loves you and treats you the way I was supposed to." He sighed. "I've gotta say I'm jealous of him too." He snickered. "But someone had to do it since I was too dumb and too late to realize it should've been my job. It could've been. And I haven't stopped regretting it since I took the wrong turn."
Diana stared as she listened.
He picked his head up and she saw his watery eyes as he tried to keep the tears down. He looked out the window hoping she wouldn't see.
"I really do love you." He sniffed and looked back at her. "I don't want you to think there was ever a time where I didn't. It was just a time I didn't have my priorities straight."
Diana wiped her cheek once a tear fell.
Stephen nodded. "But I don't think we were ever the main story. We had to fail for them, right?"
"Yea..." Diana snickered reluctantly.
Stephen rubbed his face and sighed now that he'd gotten it all out before he turned and left the kitchen.Diana faced the ceiling and let her tears fall.

Sirius made it home earlier than usual after a technical issue erupted at the mill.
Diana looked towards the front door.
"You're home early? Does that mean you're done with overtime?" she wondered.
"No, there was an eruption. We all got sent out. Might be home for a few days. Where's Annie?"
Diana couldn't tell her husband that Annie was with the former mayor's son probably having a picnic or doing whatever it is that young couples do.
"She went to the library to look for a book Jenny told her about." Diana lied and gave her attention back to the dinner she was preparing. "She should be home any minute now."
Sirius walked into the kitchen and wrapped his wife in his arms.He blessed her cheek with a kiss and watched her work.
"I missed you like crazy, woman." he sighed.
"I've missed you too. Your daughter was upset her daddy wasn't at the table for dinner anymore."
"Yea. If this don't stop any time soon, I'll have to look for a new place to work. I'm sick leavin' y'all here by yourselves."
"Where would you go?" Diana wondered and faced him.
"I don't know yet. Just somewhere else."
The two placed a sweet peck on each other's lips before Diana went back to fixing dinner and Sirius left the kitchen to take a bath.
