"Dad." Daniel called quietly from behind his door as Stephen passed by.
Stephen looked at him and was confused by his son's sneakiness.
Daniel gestured his head for Stephen to enter and opened the door further.Once he walked inside, Daniel shut the door behind him and walked to his bed to take a seat.
"What do you need?" Stephen asked.
"We got a problem."
"Have, Daniel. It's have. You're educated, talk like it. What kind of problem?"
Daniel looked down at his hands as he remembered the night before."Daniel?" Stephen called. He was beginning to feel concerned.
Daniel stared at the wall across from him.
"I beat up Scott last night." he admitted.Stephen looked around the room in confusion.
"Okay...why?"
"Do I have to tell you why?"
"Yes."
Daniel sighed and looked back at his hands."He uhh...He ran into Diana's daughter and...I was on a walk and heard her screaming for help. I followed the sound of her voice and saw her pinned under him. If I was a second late, he would've succeeded. I got to him and his dick was out with her underwear down to her knees. I was so mad I forgot he used to be my friend. He tried to get me to join in when he saw me running at him. Sick freak."
Stephen took a deep breath.
"She's still probably got a bruise on her cheek from when he hit her and her knees are pretty scraped up. I don't know where he is, I left him on the side of the street. I just know he knows I beat him up over a colored girl. And...I'm your son...and you're the mayor...I thought you'd wanna know."
Stephen stared at the floor with his hands on his hips."Well you did the right thing." he stated and looked at his son. "I mean it."
Daniel nodded.
"I don't know how this is gonna turn out. But it'll be alright."
Daniel stared at the floor.
"I expect us to move once my term is over in the next few months anyway."
"Wait what?!" Daniel stood up after his father caught his attention.Stephen stared at him.
"We'll discuss it later. But that's the plan for right now."
"Move?! Move where?!"
"Well you don't have to move. You're 23 and have a job. My term is over. The family dynamic isn't necessary anymore, you can go and do whatever it is you want to do. But I will not be here."
"You? What about mom?"
Stephen just stared at him."We'll talk about it more later." He went for Daniel's door and Daniel just stood there in shock.
"You did a good thing, Daniel." Stephen reiterated. "Don't let anyone convince you otherwise. You did a great thing."
Daniel nodded.
"I'm uh...I'm proud of you..." Stephen nodded awkwardly then left his son's room.Daniel sat there staring.

Annie was getting ready and stared in the mirror at the bruise on her cheek.
"Hurry up, I gotta pee!" Marshall yelled and banged on the door.
"Wait a damn minute!" Annie repeated for the third time.
"What the hell are you doin' in there?!" Marshall shouted.
"WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE IN MY HOUSE!" Diana hollered.
"SORRY, MAMA!" the siblings replied.Marshall grew fed up and opened the bathroom door.
Annie flinched and looked at him.
She watched concern consume his expression.
He shut the door behind himself. "What happened to your face?!"
"Shhh!" Annie exclaimed.
"Answer me!" Marshall whispered.Annie looked back at her reflection and sighed.
She looked down at the counter. "I was attacked last night."
"Last night? What were you doin' last night?"
"I wanted to know who was out there killin' us so I left to go see if I could find them and see for myself. But while I was out, I ran into a drunk white boy and...he hit me."
"Why would you go and not tell me? I would've gone with you."
"I didn't think about it."
Marshall sighed. "Goddamnit, Annie."
She rolled her eyes.
"Well don't do it anymore. I'll go another night and get you your answer."
"What?! You can't do that!"
"I'm bigger than you and stronger. You only ran into one white boy. I'll be alright. I wanna know the answer too. I'm gonna help to put a stop to it."
"Not by yourself!"
"I won't go by myself. I'll get Samuel or Johnny to come with me."
"Marshall, I don't know about this."
"Everything'll be fine. We won't start nothin'. I just wanna know what they look like so we can avoid 'em. We get a look at 'em, and we come right back home. I wanna be able to warn everybody who to look out for."
Annie thought about it."Alright. Fine. But you don't go alone." Annie dealt.
"I won't. I'll see when Johnny or Samuel wanna go and we'll head on out there."
Annie nodded.
"But you don't leave here at night without me or daddy no more. You understand?"
"Yea, I got it. I won't leave without a man by my side." she promised.
"Good. Now get out, I still gotta pee."
Annie rolled her eyes and walked towards the door."Hey, Annie?"
"Yea?"
"How'd you get free?" Marshall wondered.
"Huh?"
"You said a white man did it. How'd you get free and back home?"
"Oh...um...A black man who was driving by, got out of his truck and ran the boy off."
"Do you remember who? Maybe we can get mama to make him somethin' as a thank you."
"No, I don't."
"Hm."Annie opened the bathroom door and left.
