Emily hoisted herself up from the freezing water, hiding in the shadow of the bridge spanning the divided city. The morning was cold and the water, freezing. She took a breath and dove under, swimming toward the barb wire.
Skimming the bottom, her lungs burning, Emily slipped under the wire and into Communist Berlin.
Rising and floating toward the top Emily hauled herself out of the freezing water. Crawling out on land Emily rung out her fedora and pulled the maps from the inside pocket of her leather jacket and waited in an alley, shivering.
