Just... I'm sorry

--------------------------------------------

Daniel's crutch followed his footsteps on the cold tiles as he made his way through the dimly lit hallway towards the crackle of the fire. After waking up to a dark sky and an empty bed, he felt alone, the need to find his girlfriend growing. So grabbed his crutch, hoping he would be fine without his wooden leg. He saw his beloved, sitting cross-legged in front of the warm fire. He stood in the doorway for a moment, admiring the way the fire reflected off his love's hazel hair and her pale skin.

"My love, come back to sleep," The man called, walking up to her slowly.

"I have an early shipping out," Peggy replied, looking up at him. A small frown spread across his face as Daniel sat down next to her, placing his crutch on the couch behind them. The man's heart sank at the memory that Peggy was going to be away on another mission. She promised it would be her last for a while.

"It's still dark outside," Daniel told her, laying his tired head on her shoulder, listening to the crackle of the fire, watching contently as the fire licked into the cool air.

"I know, I couldn't sleep," Peggy said softly, pressing a light kiss to Daniel's temple. A light blush rose on his cheeks as he fought back a smile.

"Come back to bed, that would be enough," Daniel whispered as Peggy's hand guided the man's lips to hers.

"I'll be back before you know I'm gone," She said after they parted.

"Come back to sleep," Daniel asked once more, dreading the idea of returning to an empty bed, the first of many until she returned.

"We leave at dawn," She told him, pecking his forehead. Daniel sighed, suppressing a yawn.

"Well, I'm going back to sleep." He grabbed his crutch to stand. He struggled to stand on his own, so relief struck when Peggy helped him up.

Daniel gave a smile of appreciation. Peggy's hand caressed his face again, letting it soon travel through his hair. Their lips touched, their hearts exploding. Daniel pulled away, pulling Peggy's hands out of his hair. He kissed them before going to exit the room.

"Hey," He heard Peggy call. He spun around, attentive.

"I don't know what I did to deserve you. I love you," She said with a small smile, tears forming in his eyes.

"I love you too, Peg," Daniel responded, oblivious to the storm in his partner's heart.

That was the last time the two proclaimed their love to each other. Days after, Daniel received news that the love of his life had been killed in a vicious fight, along with several other SSR troops. They were so sure they had already taken them down, that this mission was just to tie any loose ends. And yet, they had to drag Peggy down with them...
