Before You Go

I can't help but wince at their words. Their insults were so well crafted, hitting each other where they knew it hurt, but not letting each other know just how much. I hear Colonel Chester Philips harshly pointing out Peggy's flaws, and her cracking voice as she defends herself.

I wait at the door waiting for my love to come back outside. I lost hope of that happening anytime soon about twenty minutes ago. I want to run into the room and hug Peggy, knowing she hated fighting with the Colonel.

"If you think I am less capable than any of those men, then I am ashamed to call you superior!" Peggy screams. I flinch, my eyes widening. She barely ever yells at someone of higher authority than herself. She keeps herself under control most of the time.

Well...now I'm scared...

Peggy bursts out of the door, leaving it wide open. She speeds away from Philips without looking back, without even looking at me. I glance back at him, his eyes wide, his mouth open like he was about to say something. Closing it, he slams his door closed, snapping me out of my paralysis. I run to catch up with Peggy, how she walks that fast in heels, I will never know.

"Peggy!" I yell, catching up with her. "Peg," I say, trying to catch her attention.

"What?" She snaps, sharply turning to face me. Her words hit me like a dagger to my heart.

"What happened there?" I ask softly, trying to calm her down, but also because I don't trust myself to talk any louder without crying.

"I think the whole camp heard, Sousa," She snapped, her eyes burning with anger. The use of my last name stung. I hated seeing my love like this, but I know I just had to give her space and she'll be fine.

I nod. "I'll be in my tent. Come get me if you need anything," I say softly, giving him a little smile. I see her eyes soften just a bit, before nodding slightly and leaving.

I sigh. There goes our window to spend time together before she leaves again. I bite my lip and go to my tent, I feel like I deserve a nap.

---------------------

I pass out on my bed the second I walk into my tent. Dreams of Peggy float through my head, putting me into quite a relaxed state. She's been so stressed lately with the war. We haven't spent that much time together either. With more troops coming into camp, there's more risk that someone will find out about our relationship. And let's just say... that would not be good.

I am awoken by a hand moving through my hair. My heart flutters as I am met with a smile.

"Hey there," I say, hearing my groggy voice.

"Hi," She stops running her fingers through my hair, her smile turning to a frown "I'm so sorry about before, Daniel. I was just in a bad mood but I know that's no excuse-"

"Hey, no, no," I stop her, sitting up in my bed. I bring my hand to brush away some of her curly hair that had fallen in front of his hazel eyes. A small blush shimmers on her cheeks, she looks down in an attempt to hide it. "I know how those fights get you. I don't blame you. I doubt I can do half of what you do without wanting to kill everyone around me." I hear her giggle lightly

"I mean, I do. Almost everyone," She grins as presses his lips to mine. I smile into the kiss, though her lips are ice upon mine. I pull her down with me as I lie down. Pressed against my chest, she continues to kiss me.

"I love you, Peg," I whisper as she snuggles her head into my chest, my arm her.

"I love you too, my love," She yawns as I continue my nap, content with the love of my life by my side.
