I know I'm writing this really sad stuff, and don't get me wrong, it hurts to write this. Buuuutttttt I just watched this one episode in parks and rec, and I don't wanna spoil it for anyone but it's the one where Ben and Leslie make the teeny tiny park and the endddddd. Nothing can ruin my mood. Anyway back to the sad story
Peggy ran to the living room. No Daniel. Tears dripped down her cheeks as she ran outside. Daniel wasn't there. She desperately ran up the stairs, muttering to herself. Begging thin air that he was still there. After climbing the stairs, she scrambled for their room. Throwing the door open, she scanned the room for the love of her life. The love of her life that wasn't there. She wiped her tears from her eyes with her palm before travelling into the room. A small piece of paper laid on the bed. With a deep breath, she opened the piece of paper that would determine her life. Swallowing her fear, she read the words scribbled on the paper
Peg. I don't know what to say. I'm hurt, I think you know that. I get why you didn't tell me, but you could have told me. I only want to help you. I just need some time, I hope you can understand that. I love you, but what you did stings, really bad. I'm going back home. I don't know when I'll be back. -Daniel
Wet spots littered the page, as if tears had fallen from his cheeks as he scribbled the painful words down. The note fell from Peggy's frozen hand. Tears poured down her cheeks as sobs screamed in her throat. She screamed as she fell to the ground.
"No! No come back! I need you! Daniel-" She yelled to him, even though he was long gone. She grabbed a fist full of her hair in an attempt to drag herself back to reality. She held her shoulders tightly, shaking violently. She shook her head, shaking the thoughts from her head.
"Peggy?!?!" Howard called, scampering up the stairs. "Peg what was that yell- oh Peg," He shrunk down to Peggy, wrapping his arms around her. Her sobs echoed through the house, accompanied by Howards whispers.
"Peg. Peg, look at me. What happened?" He asked in a soft voice, calming her forest of hair.
"Jason c-came and wanted me- t-to go back with h-h-him. I d-didn't tell D-Daniel," She sobbed at his name. "A-And then J-J-Jason told him about i-it and Da-Dan-" She broke down again, shrinking. She leant into Howards chest, who couldn't do anything more than rub her back and make some sort of sense of what Peggy was babbling. She seized the piece of paper in her wet hand and shoved it in Howard's chest. His eyes scanned over the words, his heart breaking along with Peggy's.
"Oh Peg," He whispered.
"H-he's gone b-b-because of me!" Pain rushed through her body with each sob.
"Peggy? Are you alright?" Jason asked, inching into the room. Howards eye's flew to him, Peggy's staying closed, her head shoved in his chest. Howard stood, his gaze unwavering. Peggy leant against the wall at the loss of his support.
"What do you want?" Howard snarled. He knew it was Jason's fault. So did Peggy. Even though he was lost on everything else, Jason knew that too.
"I just wanted to see if she was oka-"
"Well clearly she's not. So why don't you do us all a favor and leave a day early," Howard's rage bubbled inside of him. Peggy was like a sister to him. She had always been there for him, so he was inevitably there for her. Jason stood with a blank expression. He turned and left the room, without another word. Peggy had quietened down, her sobs reducing to a slight whimper. She stood and took a heavy breath before meeting Howard's eyes.
"I need to go find Daniel. I need to fix this," She said, tears still threatening to fall. Howard nodded, a small smile building on his face. He stepped forward to hug Peggy, wrapping his arms around her. She hid her face in his neck, needing the support. She pulled away, pulling a sad smile. "Thank you, Howard," She said softly
"No problem, Peg," He smiled, stepping out of the way so she could walk out the door. She rushed down the stairs, picking up Howard's car keys on her way out. She ran out to his car and jumped in it, wasting no time to start the ignition and pull out of the driveway. She sped down each street, nearing Daniel's house. Her heart raced as fast as the car did. Gripping the wheel tightly, she veered right onto his street.
But reality was starting to set in. What was she going to say to him? Surely a simple sorry wouldn't be enough. She pulled over in front of his house. Her balloon of hope had burst in her chest. But she knew, she knew that she couldn't give up on him. No now, not ever. Inching out of the car, she made her way up the grassy path to his front door.
It glared down at her. It mocked her. It laughed at her. It obliterated her hope. Daniel was on the other side of that door, he was hurt. He hated her, she convinced herself. She decided to run at her fears head on and knocked on the door. Three simple taps, she could hear echo through the house.
Silence.
She wouldn't expect anything else from him at that point. Her heart began to sink as she rapped the door once more. There was no sound. No movement in the house. Not even muffled whimpers.
"Daniel-" She called, pain lacing her voice. "Please open the door-" Her words got caught in her throat. Tears again glassed over her eyes in frustration.
She banged on the locked door. She yelled. She cried. She begged him to open the door so they could talk. She sat in front of his door for hours. Silence still filled the air. No movement. She sat there, knees to her chest, tears somehow still streaming down her face, when an idea floated into Peggy's head. Daniel kept a key in a pot plant in his front garden.
She pushed herself up to go retrieve the key. She spotted the plant she had seen him stuff the key in months ago, hoping that he hadn't changed it. Peggy fell to her knees in front of it, digging her hands in the moist soil. Her fingers touched something smooth, and cold. A small smile popping onto her face, she wrapped her fingers around the metal, dragging it out of the dirt.
The second fresh air had hit the surface of the key, Peggy sprinted over to his door, jamming it in the keyhole. She shoved open the door and fell into the house.
The air felt cold, as if nobody had been here in weeks. The blinds were still closed, just as Daniel left them. Peggy traveled in further, inspecting every aspect of the house. Nothing had moved. She crept towards his bedroom door. If he was anywhere, it would be in there. She secured her hand around the cold metal of the doorknob, ready to face Daniel.
She pushed open the door, but to be met with an empty room-
Her heart stopped. 'He said he was going home? Where else would he go?'
"He must have lied to get me off his track," Peggy cried, "He could be anywhere by now!" She frustratingly stamped out of the house and back into her car, locking the door again behind her. She stepped on the gas, taking the car back to her home. 'Why would Daniel lie like that? It doesn't sound like him at all. He would want to talk, wouldn't he? Probably not, honestly, he hates me.'
"He wants nothing to do with me," She mumbled as she climbed out of the car. She slogged through the door, wanting nothing more than to be alone with a lifetime supply of tissues. Of course that was still number two to Daniel.
"She's not home at the moment. Can I leave a message?" Jarvis asked a few rooms over. Peggy wondered where she heard his voice coming from. "Oh my-" Jarvis said. He sounded worried. Peggy didn't care. She just needed to ask him how many tissues they had... and how much chocolate. "Of course right away," Jarvis stated quickly. He placed the phone down and went to run out the door, almost running into Peggy.
"Jesus man! Carefu-"
"Miss Carter! We must get in the car right now!" He urged as he pushed her back the way she came
"What? No. No way. Why?" She questioned as she swatted away Jarvis' hands.
"I'll explain in the car, we have to go now. It's about Chief Sousa," He said in a soft voice, looking sadly at Peggy.
"W-What happened to him?"
"It was a call from the hospital," He said softly. As soon as these words left Jarvis' mouth, Peggy sprinted for the car.
