Short chapter, sorry :(

My heartbeats ring in my ear as I try and fail to patiently wait by the office of Lucian Huxley. I was called to his office not too long ago for heaven only knows what but this gives me an opportunity to hear his story, that is if he will tell me it all. I need to hear his side of the story, I cannot fully place my trust in strangers before I have heard from both sides. That was something my mother used to say a lot to us when we were younger and when we fought. The door opens revealing Lucian who gives a warm smile my way, "Miss Collins please do come in," he steps aside for me to enter. It's now or never I suppose. Entering the lion's den I take a seat in front of his desk as he walks around it. "Miss Collins seeing as you are the head of the infirmary I do not wish to keep you too long all I want to know is what business you had in the records quarter," he says cutting straight to the chase. "I was looking through the records on anything on your family," I say truthfully. "Why would my family's history have anything to do with you?" "Those rumours you said that were spreading around are not true, not one single nurse knows of you looking through old records," I say crossing my arms. Before coming here I had asked around about any rumours revolving around Lucian and nothing popped up. At this, he smiles, "I see you lack something very important in this operation, trust." I then chuckle at this. "Trust is earned and so far you have done nothing for me to put my trust in you if I may say," I counter with cheek.

"I trust you though," he says again catching me off guard. "You did find the book written Anastasia and by now you may have already read one or two pages, or whatever is left from it." He then continues, "You know a lot about the other world yet now you just cannot seem to put the pieces together, so shall I enlighten you further?" he asks me. Without saying anything he continues, "During the period of the war where the council fought the undead, Fitz Baker had wandered into our lands seeking any information on his father who was part of the council who sought revenge on his own son for killing his love, my pack had already known what he was, an abomination. It was unnatural for two species to mix, it was dangerous and destructive. My sister was blinded by his charms but I knew exactly what he was, a monster. At some point, Fitz's father grew scared of how easily his son could kill and break down our defences that he and his followers turned to dark magic and tried to control us, the problem is when you mess with the mind of one of us our animal parts tend to take control and our human side is completely lost." he says never looking directly in my eyes. "The problem though was Anastasia was the daughter of an Alpha our father, her mind and mine couldn't be easily messed with since we had Alphas blood running through our entire body but, it doesn't mean it did not leave some sort of effect. Slowly she began losing her mind and I knew it was all because of Fitz, I could have easily blamed his father but he was already punished for his crimes but Fitz was still untouched. She trusted him more than her own family and claimed that she fell in love with him and they were destined to be mates. I tried to steer her away from him but it was too late and he had killed her." He finishes, and no emotions run through his eyes as he finally looks at me. "Fitz killed her in cold blood and left her body out in the open like it was nothing," he says. So Fitz killed Lucians' sister, how cruel. "And why are you telling me all of this?" I finally ask. "I couldn't save Anastasia from him but I am hoping to save you, Fitz has a craving for power and blood," he says. "What makes you think I know him?" I ask feeling scared again. "You can try and lie but I know, your pulse rises every time you do. You have been meeting with Fitz for quite some time now, I know that you are his long-awaited mate." I feel a lump form in my throat at this. "I found out the night of the company launch," he says answering my question. "You think Fitz will do to me what he did your sister?" I ask feeling scared of his answer. "Anastasia thought she could help him, almost anyone who gets close to him dies or ends up hurt, being his mate won't stop his hunger," he says. Taking deep breaths to calm my pulse I hear him say, "I won't hurt you, Madeleine," at this I laugh. "Really I'm not convinced, especially when you sent seventeen undead after me," I say. "I wasn't sure how deep you were in his circle, I needed to find out somehow but they were never meant to hurt you only to bring you to me safely," he says. "Why did you want me?" I ask. "I have a plan to end Fitz once and for all but for it to work I need his weakness, you being his mate may be the closest thing I have," he answers. "How do I know you are not lying to me?" I ask narrowing my eyes. "Go and finish reading the book, then you can decide for yourself whether you can trust me or not," he says as he rises to my feet. I then rise and make my way to the door, "Does Alexander know?" I ask. "He only knows that our allies are wolfmen, nothing else," he reassures me with a smile. "Goodday Miss Collins," he greets.

I don't know anymore, I don't know who I can trust. It is frustrating if Fitz did kill her as Lucian had stated what would he do to me if I had agreed to complete the mate bond?

I walk back into the infirmary to find the place busy and bodies everywhere, men screaming in pain and nurses rushing all over the place. I quickly go and help Grace in holding down a man as one nurse pushes his bone back in place, "Fuck, I'll kill him!" he yells as we hear the bone pop back in place. "Who did this?" I hear Lucian's voice from behind, I take morphine and inject it into his leg. "It was an undead, except he was not like the others, he was much stronger. I saw my men flying and he didn't even lift a finger." He finishes as he lays down. I feel Lucians' eyes on me, I turn to face him and his words ring in my ears ' it was unnatural for two species to mix, it was dangerous and destructive'

Fitz did this?

I turn to walk out of the infirmary for some air, I reach the outside doors and find Cole standing there. "I heard your conversation with Huxley and Madeleine you are making a big mistake to trust him," he tries to reason. "Oh and I suppose I can put my trust in you and Fitz?" I counter crossing my arms. "Those men may die because of whatever Fitz had done to them, how can I trust anyone at this point," I say.

"The problem with the council is you are trained like soldiers, not once did your family allow you to think with your heart only your mind," he says. "I cannot force you to make choices but I advise you to trust yourself and not what others tell you." That is all he says before walking away.
