When I wake up, my eyes immediately burn from the sun's rays shining through the curtains. As I remember the events that have happened, I quickly sit up, only to find the familiar surroundings of my room. I try to climb out of bed, but I immediately feel pain all over my body, making me whimper. I decided to lie down for a bit and go over the events of last night.

From going to the party to talking to Grace, to her disappearance, to him. As I remember what he did, I feel the pain on the side of my neck, running through my whole body, making me scream.

I was hoping it was all a dream. When I looked into those terrible eyes that showed no emotion or sincerity for the lives they had taken. The doors burst open revealing my maid rushing to my aid. "Madam, is everything alright?" she asked with worry in her eyes. "Everything is fine, thank you, Elaine," I say, reassuring her. I hear a few more footsteps and Xavier comes in. " I am going to draw you a bath, ma'am," Elaine says, excusing herself. " You look like shit ", is the first thing he says and I roll my eyes " Where the hell were you last night? " I ask. " That's not important right now sister, how are you? " He dodges the question. " You slept with someone didn't you " I state. " That depends on how you define 'sleeping with someone.' " I define it as sexual intercourse with a stranger, how would you define it? " I raise my eyebrows.

"I would define it as accommodating someone's needs," he says and a smirk curls his lips, "It's the same blady thing except towards a stranger," I say and frown, "Oh, she's not a stranger, especially to you," I think thoughtfully about who I am close to that he would temporarily get involved with, then it clicks. " You bastard, you slept with Grace of all people! " I shout, " shout even louder, I do not think all of London heard you," he says rolling his eyes. " Where are the other two? " I ask wondering where my other two brothers are, " Alexander is downstairs talking to the doctor and Nathaniel drowns his regrets in a bottle of whiskey in the study," he says casually. " How did I get home?", I ask, puzzled. " Well I guess the other night turned into a bloodbath, we tried to look for you and Nathaniel found you outside on the floor, " what does he mean the other night, this just happened last night. " Wait, was this not last night?", I ask. " Madeleine, that was four nights ago, " he says frowning. " The bath is ready, madam," Elaine says. "We will talk more later," he says, kissing me on the forehead and making his way out.

I lie in the bathtub, enjoying the warm water that relaxes my muscles. Four days have passed since the incident, I have slept for four days. I feel my neck again and I feel the shape of the bite he gave me, and I get goosebumps on my skin. The doctor had come right after Xavier left and had explained my condition. My body had lost a lot of blood, but luckily one of my brothers was kind enough to draw his blood and give it to me. He said it was quite a shock to see me awake and he was even more surprised that I could speak normally even though my throat was bruised. I could not help but wonder why he did not just kill me like the others or why I did not turn or die.

When I realise that the water is getting cold, I decide to climb out. I have been given morphine to numb the pain and make it easier for me to work, but I have been told to stay home for a few more days to fully recover before going back out.

As I walk down the stairs, I make my way to the study to speak with Nathaniel. When I open the door, I find him sitting in a chair in front of the flames of the fire. " What is it? " He says with a harsh tone that leaves me a little taken aback. " Brother, are you alright? " I ask, walking around the chair to face him. His hair is dishevelled and his eyes are bloodshot. " How are you feeling?" he asks sincerely. The look in his emotionally charged eyes reminds me of the vacant eyes of a devil. "Madeleine," I am snapped out of my thoughts. "I am very well," I smile. " You do not seem to be " " Oh, I did not notice ", he says sarcastically. " I am really fine " I assure him. " You were on the floor, Madeleine, bruised and bitten, and I was not there to protect you," he says, getting frustrated. I understand where this is coming from, he felt the same way with our parents, helpless because he could not protect them either, the only difference is that I am still breathing. " Even though you were not there, I am still here, so please let us move on," I say. Sighing he turns to me and pulls me into a hug. I wrap my arms around him, knowing he needs this more than I do. "I am glad you are okay," he says, sighing in relief. The big question is, how am I?

" Oh, thank God you are all right," Grace sighs in relief as she enters my room. I open my arms to hug her. When I pull them back, she smiles broadly at me. " How are you doing? " She asks, making herself comfortable on the bed. "Much better today, thank you." "I am sorry I left you alone. If I had not left, I am sure this would not have happened," she says, sadness spreading across her features. "Oh God, do not act like Nathaniel now, please," I say, rolling my eyes. Mistakes happen, but it's always best to move on instead of holding on, it's no good, that's what my mother always told me. " Where did you go, I looked everywhere for you but I could not find you," I say knowing the answer but it's always funny to see the excuses they come up with. " Oh, I decided to have a cigarette with your brother", she says without looking me in the eye. I raise my eyebrows and say, " Xavier did not tell me that ", and I watch her eyes get big with surprise, " He told you? " she asks, " How long has this been going on? " I ask, ignoring her previous question. " Two months," she says looking down at the floor, her blonde hair falling around her. " That's disgusting," I say smiling. I look up and look into her green eyes showing guilt. " You are not mad? " She asks " No, it's not my life and I am not the one getting pregnant after this so..." Before I can finish speaking, a pillow is thrown at me and I have to laugh.

She settles down next to me and we both stare into space. " Were you scared? " she asks. Memories flash in my head, the look in those empty eyes and the lives he took with no regrets, not even a glimpse sends shivers down my spine, pleasant and unpleasant. "Yes, I was terrified," I finally say. " What was it like?" she continues. " Grace, please, I can not, " I say, begging her to stop.

" I have come to give you news," she says, sitting back up. "One of the council members is resigning and his son will be taking his place starting next week." " Oh, what's his name? " Finally a distraction from my misery. " His name is Lucian Huxley, " Oh dear, the Huxley family were friends with our family, but after our parents died we cut ties with them, the only time you saw them was at council meetings. Matthew Huxley, the former council member, was a good friend of my father's. I remember dinners together, though I do not recall them ever having a son. " Also, there is news about the creatures, " Grace says, making me curious. " There was another attack at one of the local restaurants, but it was during the day " " I thought they only came out at night, the sun would burn them, " I say confused. The ones we catch are tested to find out their weakness. They had found out that the sun is their weakness, it burns them. Another way to kill them is to use a dagger and stab their heart. "That's what we thought, but it seems like they have adapted," she says, concern resonating in her eyes.
