It's been one week since I last saw him and felt his lips on me. The memory is still embedded in my mind, it's hard to shake off the desirable feeling. But I must, no matter what or how my body responds my mind has more power at the moment. "Madeleine?" I hear Alexander say, looking around the table I find that all eyes are on me, did I miss something? "Mrs Elwood was asking if you have ever thought about working elsewhere away from the infirmary," he gestures to the elder woman next to him. As Alexander had said he did indeed plan a dinner with the Elwoods, in order for James and I to get closer. "Oh umm I could never leave that place, I rather enjoy saving those that risk their lives for our safety it makes me feel I have played my part," smiling at her. "I couldn't agree more, although, for a woman as young as you, I should think marriage and the satisfactory of your husband would be your motive." Oh, how I wish I could roll my eyes at this woman's view on women, thinking that they only have one purpose in life. She may be traditional but times have changed drastically. "Grace unfortunately has no desire to be bound to a man, I would hope you set the example," she says giving a very nonbelieving smile. "Times have changed mother, it's best to go with those changes," James chimes in. When is this dinner over? "Where were you a few moments ago?" Grace whispers to me as the rest continue on a new topic. "I was just thinking about something is all," Grace gives an unconvinced look but doesn't push. I never told her about what actually happened since I am not sure either, from being kidnapped to the council secrets and now being bound to a mad man I am surprised I haven't lost my own mind trying to figure this out. I feel a tap on my right turn I face James who has an amused look on his face. "You don't seem interested in this dinner," feeling a blush rise to my cheeks I take a sip of my water. "Forgive me, my mind is elsewhere at the moment," "I do hope my mother has not offended you," "Nothing I haven't heard before," I say shrugging. "How was your trip to France?" I ask changing the subject. "Nothing but business really, council wanted to communicate with the french to find out the commotion in Germany," he says. "What do you mean commotion, what is happening in Germany?" I ask confused, what business is it for the council to be spying on Germany? "Well so far it's rumoured, but apparently they are breaking the treaty," he says in a whisper. "I don't understand what this has to do with the council," "Well, we may think that this is being done by the undead, but again it's only rumoured," he says.
"Me and you will have lunch at the cafe on Sunday, we must talk," Grace says before hugging me goodbye. She then looks up, her eyes glued onto something, turning around I find Xavier staring at her. Yes indeed we must talk, I thought to myself.
"Swing harder," Xavier says dodging all my attacks. Due to the news of the undead and their ability to walk in the sun, Alexander thought it be best if I continued my training. Xavier swings his hand downwards to stab me from above, holding up my arms in a cross-motion I block his attack. While he tries to put pressure on pushing further, I use my knee to kick him in his stomach earning a groan from him as he staggers backwards. "What is going on between you and Grace?" I ask, which catches him off guard. "Nothing is going on, why do you ask?" he says rather quickly. Regaining himself, he moves his fingers in a come motion. I move forward slowly, then lunge forward to stab his chest, but he catches my hand, his leg then comes round to knock my feet off the ground. The next thing I see is the sky. "The way you both looked at each other said there was something," I say smiling. "Where did you go last week Friday?" he then asks catching me off guard. "The maids said they saw you leave with someone," shit. "I accompanied someone somewhere," I say, it is the truth however not all of it. "Are you lying?" "Of course not I am telling the truth," he then extends his hand out for me to grasp and pulls me up. "You need to stop assuming that their chests will be open for you to directly stab," he says to which I simply nod my head, not at all interested in fighting. "So, is she pregnant?" "Blady hell madeleine, why do you assume such things," he says irritation evident in his eyes. "We slept together is all," he finally says earning a grin from me. "Why are you smiling like that?" shaking my head I say, "Xavier Collins this is the longest you have been with someone, could it be" "Don't say it," he says. "Xavier Collins will not be tied down," "If you say so," I say trying to suppress my laughter.
Walking through the house I hear talking coming from the library, as I enter I find Nathaniel and Lucian. They both look up from their conversation, "Apologies brother and Mr Huxley," I say. "Madeleine I am actually glad you are here," Lucian says rising to his feet. "Oh?" "Yes, it has come to our attention that there are rumours spreading amongst the nurses that MR Huxley was looking through the Baker records, this is causing distractions within your quarter," Nathaniel says. "We were hoping you could maybe erase this rumour," "Well is it true?" I ask catching them off guard. "Madeleine, the Baker family line died a long time ago, why would I want to read their records?" Lucifer asks raising his brow. I shrug my shoulders not wanting to embarrass myself further. "Well then it is sorted, I am depending on you to put this rumour to rest, I'll be on my way now." Once the door closes, I turn to face a disappointed Nathaniel, "What was that all about?" "Sorry, I don't know what came over me," "Lucian is a good man, who is trying to better the council and you question him," " Apologies brother, it's just, why do we keep records on a non-existent bloodline?" I ask. "There is nothing but family members in those records and their activities in the council Madeleine, nothing else," is all he says before leaving me alone in the library.
