Passion for Blood

Chapter 6:

As I enter the infirmary, I notice that the group is huddled in a circle, whispering to each other. A few giggles can be heard and I roll my eyes. "What are we talking about?", I say rather loudly, bringing the gathering to a halt, which brings a smile to my lips. " Madeleine, you are alright," one of the nurses says, smiling kindly at me. "Yes, can someone explain to me what's going on?"

As I look through the keyhole of one of the meeting rooms, I see three men standing there talking. " Which one of them is it? " I whisper. The girls told me that the new council member had arrived and was devilishly handsome, and because I did not believe them, we spied on one of their meetings, which is strictly against the rules. " Move aside," Grace says as she turns to look at him. " Oh, he's incredibly handsome, this is so wrong," she says, gasping at what she sees, causing the others to giggle. " Indeed it is wrong, we should not be here at all," I say crossing my arms. " At least take a look at our new member," she demands. " When I look through the keyhole, all I see are the men's backs. " Which one is it? " I ask. " You'll find out ", is all I hear before I finally see him. His very prominent blue eyes look around the room until they focus on the other two men. He gives them a warm smile showing a dimple on the side of his cheek, " Oh wow, " I say. " Wow indeed, " I hear from behind me. Rolling my eyes I peek again only to see them making their way to the door. "Shit they are coming! ", I whisper yell. They all rush back to the infirmary, it takes me a second to get back up as my body is still in pain, but by then it is too late and the doors open revealing Alexander, Matthew and Lucian all staring at me.

" Madeleine, I heard you had returned, how are you, my dear? " Matthew asks, completely ignoring the fact that I was spying on them. "Very well, thank you, sir," I say smiling. " That's good, may I ask what you are doing here? " He asks, raising an eyebrow. I can feel heat rising in my cheeks, which elicits a smirk from Lucian. " I was looking for my brother ", I say with a gesture towards Alexander, who is not exactly impressed with my excuse. " What for?" he blurts out. " I do not see what business it is of yours, Mr Huxley, " I shoot. " Madeleine, a word please " Alexander interferes, we excuse ourselves and head down the hall to the exit. " What the hell were you doing?" he asks with visible irritation in his voice. " Sorry brother, the nurses..." " The nurses have no control over you Madeleine, grow up already!" he yells, to which the heads of passersby turn in our direction. Sighing, he says, " You know very well you should not be in the council quarters, and neither should your friends. " is all he says before stomping off. Alexander hates being embarrassed, especially when it happens in front of important people.

Huffing I make my way back to the nurses' station to avoid all the stares. As I enter, I notice Grace restocking the medicine cabinets. "You really are a friend," I say, crossing my arms as I reach her. " How was it? " She asks, not paying any further attention to me. " Oh fantastic, my brother got mad and I embarrassed myself in front of the new council member," I say. " Oh, what's he like? " She asks, completely forgetting about the medicine and ignoring my rant, which completely shocks me. " I am sorry I did not get to talk to him because my brother lectured me, but next time I'll let you know, " I say with a fake smile that quickly fades. I then decide to help her refill the meds since there is not much to do. " You have to admit he looks pretty good," she says wiggling her eyebrows, which gives me a genuine smile. " Whatever you say, Grace," I say shaking my head and continue packing.

The dining room is silent at the table, with only the sounds of cutting and biting. Alexander is still angry with me and has not said a word to me after we got home. " Who made him mad?" Xavier breaks the silence, causing heads to rise, except for Alexander's. " Does it matter? " Nathaniel asks. " I do not think so," he says, continuing to eat, as do the rest of us. " Madeleine, what did you do? " He asks again and Nathaniel groans in irritation. " She was caught in the Council quarters spying on our meeting with Lucian Huxley," Alexander says, to which I roll my eyes. "Is that all? " Xavier says disappointed, to which Alexander scowls him. "May I ask why? " Nathaniel turns to question me. " Because the nurses told her to, " Alexander says again. " Oh how lovely, I do not suppose you would jump off a cliff if you were ordered to " Nathaniel looks at me unimpressed. " Oh for goodness sake, you are both overreacting, " I say in frustration. " Oh, I have been meaning to tell you that the doctor wants to see you next week for a checkup," Xavier says and everyone goes quiet.

" What was it like?" asks Xavier, earning a scowl from Nathaniel and Alexander. "For heaven's sake, we all wondered," he says irritably. " What I'd like to know is why you did not use your dagger," Nathaniel asks. " I could not, I was not even thinking about it, I was just thinking about running away, but he was incredibly fast..." " He? You said he," Alexander says with a furrowed brow. " Yes, it was a man," I say feeling my stomach drop. " Did you see him, there's a chance we could find him?" Nathaniel asks. How could I forget his features that have imprinted on me, his brown eyes that stare at you so intensely they turn into a black void, his presence that sent goosebumps down my body, even though he was scary he still intrigued me? He did not kill me like the other women, he even wiped my tears. " Madeleine, " Xavier says, expecting an answer, so I say " He had a mask on, so I could not see anything, " " Well that's great, " Nathaniel says, getting up and leaving. " I want to know how I did not turn or die though, " I ask Alexander. " We do not know that either sister, all we know is that when you get bitten you either turn or die, and when you become food they usually drink every last drop out of your body, the fact that you are still alive is a miracle, " he says." But he spared me," I say more to myself. " Why do you say that?" asks Xavier. " He killed the other women without hesitation, but he..." " It's late, I think we should continue tomorrow do you think" Alexander interrupts.
