Scott and Mitch sat in the car outside a house that neither of them thought they would ever see again. Mitch stared out the front window, and Scott reached over to place his hand on Mitch's shoulder.

Scott: You ready?

Mitch: I guess. Scott, has it really been a week and two days since we lost Kailyn?

Scott: It seems like an eternity. Mitch, we can do this, but only if we do it together. We can't do it unless we're together.

Mitch: I have pretty amazing friends, don't I?

Scott: You sure do; now, let's see what our game plan is for today. It looks like the police are here, so we should be able to see what we are going to do.

Mitch just simply nodded as he got out of the car. Scott sat there and put his head on the steering wheel.

Scott: Don't worry, sweetheart. We're coming. Just hang on, please.

As the words left his mouth, he got out of the car. He took a deep breath and joined Mitch, where Chief Bennet and Chief Smith were with several officers. One of the K9 officers walked up to Scott.

Jacob Stevens: Mr. Hoying?

Scott turned to Jacob and smiled. He dipped his head as he waited for Jacob to continue speaking.

Scott: Yes? Hi Jacob! It's nice that you get to help with this case. Did you ask to be put on it?

Jacob: No, sir. They automatically put me on it since Jasper is excellent at tracking. Also, I don't believe I have properly introduced myself.

Scott: That doesn't matter if you don't mind me calling you Jacob.

Jacob: It doesn't bother me one bit, sir.

Jacob looked at the ground as Jasper sat calmly beside him. The police officer shifted slightly, making Scott get confused.

Scott: Is there something you want to ask me?

Jacob: Could I join your search party? The personal one?

Scott: Of course, you can!

Jacob's blue eyes brightened then he went to join Chief Bennet as Mitch walked up to Scott.

Mitch: You nervous?

Scott swallowed, and it felt as if there was a lump in his throat. He was more upset about what happened here almost a year ago at this house.

Scott: What if we don't find her?

Mitch's brown eyes darkened, but he clenched his fists and straightened himself, looking at Scott. Determination blazed in his eyes as he held his friend's gaze, but then he realized that Scott wasn't paying attention to him.

Mitch: We keep looking.

Then Mitch realized that Scott's blue eyes were fixed on the sidewalk, and instantly, Mitch knew what was wrong. The last time he had seen this house was when he had found Kirstin extremely close to death.

Mitch: Scott, that's in the past now. She's better.

Scott: Y-you're right, Mitch. It's just hard seeing the place that Kirstie had laid so close to death. We could've lost her, Mitch. I should have been more protective of her.

Mitch: It's not your fault; it's Jessica's.

Jacob stepped forward, following Samantha Peterson, Jessica Peterson's adopted sister. She opened the door before she stepped aside to allow the police to search the house. Scott and Mitch looked at each other, and Mitch nodded. Taking a deep breath, they followed the police officers into the house. Chief Bennet quickly explained the plan, and Mitch and Scott split up. As Scott thought about a place to start, he noticed that the basement door was open. He quickly told an officer that he would check the basement before he cautiously stepped down the stairs. Before he reached the bottom, Scott paused and took a deep breath. When he turned the light on, his heart dropped, and his shoulders sagged as he found nothing. Then his attention was drawn to the blood on the floor. Hope kindling inside him, he ran upstairs and quickly found Jacob. The three of them rushed back downstairs, and Jacob crouched down. His heart was pounding, which matched what Scott was feeling.

Jacob: Identify it, boy.

Jasper automatically sniffed it as if he wanted to find Kailyn as much as everyone else. He lifted his head, and his tail wagged. Jacob patted his dog before smiling.

Jacob: It's her. He scented her! That means that she's definitely been here! Good boy, Jasper! Let's go tell the chief.
