I could hear voices outside, and suddenly I recognized that they were Kirstin and Scott. Straining my ears to hear what they were saying, I listened intently.

Kirstin: Officer Stevens, I understand that it might be dangerous to search the building, but could we please give it a shot? Please?

Scott: Please, Jacob. For Kailyn, at least.

There was silence then I realized that Jacob was with them. My boyfriend came with them to find me! Jacob! I can't wait to see you! I wanted to feel his warmth. I longed to see the love sparkling in his soft blue eyes. I heard a dog barking then I knew instantly that Jasper knew I was alive and breathing. He knew that I was in pain because that dog could sense anything. The desperation in Kirstin's voice made me wonder if she had been told I was dead, but she refused to believe that. I then could hear the sounds of a door being broken down. The barking that came from Jasper started to get closer, and I could hear rapid footsteps behind him. Kirstin was following him! Before long, a gunshot exploded through the building, and I heard a cry of pain from Mitch and a cry of death from someone I didn't recognize, but fear overtook my body. Mitch! No, please, no! Mitch couldn't die. I wanted to see him again! Suddenly the barking started up again and then I knew then: Jasper was following my scent, and Kirstin was following him. Then the barking turned into a joy-filled whimper and I immediately knew that he had found me. I heard footsteps in the room, following claws scraping against a hard surface. Then I heard the most joyous sound I could ever hear at that moment: Kirstin's voice.

Kirstin: Kailyn!

She dashed forward and fell to her knees beside my wounded body. At first, she must have not seen the faint rise and fall of my chest because she gasped with heartbreak.

Kirstin: We're too late after all.

I painfully tried to take a deep breath, but it was too painful to take that big of a breath because of the straps around my neck and chest. Kirstin gently placed her hand on my arm, and I felt tears flowing from her eyes. Jasper whimpered then I jerked slightly when another gunshot and a cry of pain rose into the air, and instantly I thought that it was Kirstin. But I felt a body stretched across mine and knew that Kirstin was protecting my body, which I thought she believed was dead.

Kirstin: Kailyn?

Then she gently placed her hand on my chest and when I winced it shot back to her body. Kirstin smiled and leaned over to make sure that it wasn't just her.

Kirstin: She's alive! You're alive, Kailyn. Scott! Kailyn's alive!

She gently ran her hands down my arms, and I didn't feel pain. I only felt her warmth and care. Kirstin knew that I was alive, and now she was acting like a mother. I then could tell that there was someone else beside me.

Mitch: Kailyn, I'm glad that you're alive!

Mitch! He's alive! I then could tell that a strap had been cut off, and surprisingly I could breathe easier. Kirstin continued to soothe me as Scott got the others off. When they were cut, I felt my body lifted and placed into Kirstin's arms. I could easily feel that they were Kirstin's because of how smooth they were. A calm feeling swept through my body, allowing me to relax under the care and caressing of Kirstin. She was mothering me, and I was glad for the care that she was showing me now. I then could feel my body beginning to weaken, and I felt no pain. I was falling unconscious. Before long, I remembered or felt nothing. Everything was quiet, and it seemed as if I was alone.
