Alyson was always the more laid-back of the Parker siblings. She wasn't a child genius like Peter, she didn't have the first clue on biophysics or chemical engineering or whatever the hell it was her brother did, but she credited herself on other things—her humour for one, her curiosity, even if it got her into some semi-dangerous situations sometimes and most of all, her fearlessness.
Although, her brother thought the latter was more of a burden than anything.
Throughout Alyson's life it had been tragedy over tragedy, leaving her a never ending rush of devastation to the point it exhausted her to feel anymore pain, but she had a way of turning that pain into something else, something useful. It was a way to dull her fear, to push it down into the very depths of herself. The worst had already happened, and so what was the point in hiding away and feeling the world cave in over and over again, when she could go out and live, like her parent's would want her too, like Uncle Ben would've wanted. Alyson wouldn't let anything stand in her way, if she wanted to do something, she simply did it. Nothing could hold her back.
That terrified Peter because he knew that same stubborn fearlessness always landed his sister in trouble.
After their uncle Ben died they started looking into their father's research, which had always been an uncomfortable topic for their aunt and uncle, since it was that very same research that had lead to the Parker's deaths. But in a way, it was their father's legacy, and so were the Parker siblings, so between them both they decided they couldn't just let it all rot away.
It wasn't hard sneaking into the labs, they were on one of the lowest floors of the skyscraper building, accessible through a window and down a quiet corridor. It took a while to find the one that had belonged to Richard Parker, but once they did there were dozens of papers, essays left behind, stashed away in metal cabinets and forgotten by the company he'd worked for, covered up with new lab equipment, new scientists to take over the space. Apparently it hadn't lasted long. There were charred marks in the corners of the room, tinged blue and black and with a slight metallic smell.
An experiment gone wrong, Peter had guessed, crouching down by the marks. It seemed the whole floor had been mostly cast aside after that incident, abandoned. That didn't stop their frequent visits.
One day in particular, while they were getting ready to go explore the lab again, their aunt May had caught Peter sneaking out of his bedroom, early in the morning on a school night. She'd sent him back to bed, lecturing him over the dangers of underage drinking while Alyson crept past behind them, shooting her brother an apologetic shrug as she climbed out onto the fire escape.
Alyson also had school in the morning, but she was in her senior year, so she'd had a lot more experience with sneaking out than her brother had. If it wasn't for their late night lab trips, the only place her brother would probably even want to sneak out for would be a midnight release of the new star wars movie with his best friend.
Peter was a good kid, he'd always been a good kid. Good grades, good manners, good kid.
Alyson wasn't a good kid.
