Tabitha looks after Jughead in the lead-up to his hearing-doctor appointment.

The doctor's office was not an ideal location to spend a bright, sunny morning with your girlfriend. But here Jughead found himself, trying to soothe his nervous butterflies by playing with the metal zipper on his Tabitha's cuff and allowing her to gently run her fingers across his back.

Despite their carefully planned timing, the couple had somehow arrived over half an hour early to the appointment. They'd spent the first ten minutes or so trying to watch heavily captioned YouTube videos through shared earbuds, before it became apparent that Jughead was just not going to be able to focus. He was so jittery he could barely sit still on the chair.

Upon noticing his anxiety, Tabitha gestured for him to place his head on her shoulder and started rhythmically stroking circles into his shoulder blades. Something about her touch made him feel instantly more relaxed.

"Jughead? Jug?" He suddenly felt a soft tapping on his shoulder and found his girlfriend looking kindly at him.

"Sorry, I missed that," he replied.

Tabitha smiled and squeezed his hand.

"That's ok, it's what we're here for. The doctor just said she'll be ready for you in a minute or two.

For what felt like the millionth time that day, he felt as though his heart had gone into overdrive. Tabitha noticed the way his face dropped, immediately picking up his hand and holding it to her heart. He could feel the steady beating through her cotton sweater.

"You know that I love you no matter what, right?" she asked, "and whatever happens, we'll get through this together."

He leaned forward and fell into her cosy embrace. She smelled of coconut shampoo and the rich, sweet scent that lingered in the diner.

The hug only lasted a moment, before a nurse wearing a floral blouse and tight, blue skirt stepped up in front of them.

"Mr Jones? We're ready for you."
