The Yoo family's security system had not been damaged in the past year. No Purger had tampered with it, tried to break in or do bad things to the family. It had been a quiet, smooth night. And that's how every Purge should be for them. With no casualties, no deaths, no grief.

It was supposed to feel like Purge night wasn't even happening. As if it were a normal night when the family sat together, dined together, and watched children's videos.

How much the parents of this little family of four loved those videos, never wanted to miss them.

But this year was different because their only son would not be sitting with them.

When Kihyun reached home, his father was already installing the security system. There was only a little time left until the Purge and everything had to work properly so that the family would not be in danger. The music was still blaring in his ears, so loud that his father could hear him from a distance and turned to look at his son.

"Kihyun," he spoke, making sure the young Korean pulled the earplugs out of his ears. Immediately the joyful music stopped, letting the atmosphere become stifling again.

"Ree."

For years, the 24-year-old had called his father by his teenage nickname, always gave him a strange feeling. But Kihyun was also different in the eyes of others.

He was not a usual young man.

"Yoongi was looking for you earlier," the father informed, causing Kihyun to stop and wonder why Yoongi had come looking for him so early. Immediately, the question formed if something had happened, if something had happened to him while he was doing certain things. Lifting his head again, he looked into the older man's worried face and nodded silently.

"I'll call him."

Somewhat wistfully, Kihyun strode past his father in the direction of the front door, but was grabbed by his wrist and unceremoniously pulled into a fervent embrace.

"You know," he began, squeezing his son tightly, "that we are proud of you?"

Kihyun, who seemed completely crushed by the embrace, gasped a little, patting his father's back appreciatively. "Yes, Ree, I know."

"You know," the father continued, his eyes closed sensuously, "if anything goes wrong, we'll be here waiting for you." His father's words created eerie goosebumps on his body, made him feel uneasy. Yet he remained steadfast, even as his father moved away and looked at him with watery eyes.

It was a heartbreaking image.

"You don't have to wait for me, nothing will go wrong."

The family elder's gaze traveled over the picture-perfect face of his son, whom he wanted to be safe that night. Hastily, he reached into the back pocket of his pants, pulled out a piece of paper and pressed it into Kihyun's hands. "Here are all the safezones and numbers you can use in case you're in a jam."
