As arranged, Sota and the car were in front of the Chae family home half an hour before the purge began. However, it had taken much longer to get everyone into the vehicle on time when a young woman like Danbi was ten minutes late, Hyungwon's mother was still packing provisions and his father was still cleaning the old pistol. On top of that, Hyungwon's sister spent the last ten minutes loading her MP3 songs onto the new player, so everyone wasn't in the car until the Purge alarm sounded.
"What do you mean: You're not coming with us?" exclaimed Hyungwon's mother, startled. Her face had suddenly turned white as a sheet, and she stared at her son as if he had gone completely mad.
The latter, however, only lowered his gaze, for it hurt to utter this confession. "I will fight with some people, we will save the injured, give them a chance to survive," he began, sighing and fighting the shocked look that burned on his skin like cold fire. His father, who sat across from him, regarded his son with a silent scrutiny. "We are rebelling against our government. - I know father that you have a high opinion of our police and military," Hyungwon interjected before the elder could speak up in protest. "But you can't imagine how many of the military, police and government are involved in the Purge. This holiday has nothing to do with mental cleansing ... It's all about keeping the economy going."
His father put his hands one over the other, which he had supported on his walking stick. His eyes were closed and he seemed very absorbed. His mother, on the other hand, seemed to have no answer for her son's words and was struggling with tears.
Surely it was hard for his parents.
A foreign environment and the eldest son not present to protect them.
The silver-haired soldier turned his head and glanced toward the back row of seats, where Jieun was busy with her new MP3 player, oblivious to this conversation.
"I beg your pardon," Hyungwon's father finally said, slowly opening his eyes and looking directly at the silver-haired man. This request came as a surprise to Hyungwon, as his father always wanted to be in the right. "What I said to you ... was ... inappropriate."
"Already forgotten."
The words were even true, as Hyungwon was used to criticism from his parents and didn't give it much importance anymore.
"Are you two going too?" asked Misses Chae into the front cabin of the car directed at Hoseok and Sota. The white-haired young man at the wheel scratched the back of his head in embarrassment, not knowing how to respond.
Sota, who equally did not want to be dragged into this situation, only gave a long drawn out, "Ehh,".
"All four of us are going, ma'am," Danbi, who was sitting in the back with Jieun, interjected into the conversation, triggering an uncomfortable silence. The older woman stared at the younger in shock, unable to believe her ears.
