The forest floor thundered as heavy paws struck against it acceleratedly, kicking up debris as it weaved through tall hemlock trees. The evening sky was azure blue, and the air was cool and crisp as it combed through the heated russet brown fur and stung as it puffed back out through the nose in a cloud.
Jacob had felt like going on a run. Things had been tense back at home. With his best friend's vampire returned safe and sound, 'Ugh, asshole,' Bella had sent Jacob back to the dog house.
He had made so much progress with her over the past few months. Helping her get over that disgusting bloodsucker after he up and left her, breaking her innocent heart and causing the girl to fall into a deep depression.
Jacob couldn't lie. It was hard—adjusting to her in many different ways. In one way, he wasn't used to her constant attention. Although it was nice to finally feel wanted by her, he knew it was all for the wrong reasons. Being a rebound and used certainly wasn't the fun part, but he actually enjoyed the time he spent with her. He had missed her for so long that he was willing to take whatever he could get out of it. So he guessed he wasn't helping the situation by encouraging her to use him.
Handling her depressive mood and sudden—stupid and dangerous—interest in adrenaline wasn't easy either. On the one hand, he understood why she was hurt, but on the other, he couldn't understand why she would allow it to be over a leech . Despite this, he was Bella's friend, and he loved her dearly, so he wasn't going to let that get in the way of being there for her when she needed him the most. Again, even if it was for all the wrong reasons.
They really were starting to become close again, and Jacob had even thought for a moment that maybe they were starting to get somewhere closer. It was a step in the right direction. Until the little pieces Jacob had been tediously glueing back together, and even built extra on top of that, had all come crashing down.
What got to him the most wasn't the complete waste of time and energy it all was. It was when she tossed Jacob to the side for the vampire, who still didn't want her. After desperately pleading for Bella to stay with Jacob and her return from Italy, it was made clear that Edward didn't want to take Bella back. Edward was still set on keeping himself and his family as far away from her as the small town of Forks would allow. It seemed as though everywhere Edward went, every move he made would cause some kind of danger. In addition, Bella fell back into isolation because of Edward's rejection. She had requested Jacob to "Fuck off," if he recalled correctly.
Jacob knew better, yet during those months with just the two of them, he still desperately tried to pursue his childhood crush. Of course, he could take a hint; she didn't reciprocate the feelings. But that was only because she couldn't see the filthy bloodsuckers for what they were and was somehow cast under a sadistic spell.
Acting as if they care about anyone but themselves. Their flashy lives with dirty money streaming out of their asses. Supernatural abilities any human would dream of. Their devastating beauty and, of course—the cherry on top—immortality. It was enough to make Jacob gag with pure rage. It didn't matter what they did to cover up the fact that they were abominations. Jacob saw right through the facade.
Hopefully, it wasn't too late for Bella to change her mind. Maybe only now will she realise that Jacob really was better for her in every way, when Edward still denied her, after she risked her life for Edward and friendship with Jacob to save the revolting creature.
Jacob couldn't believe it. Not only did he think that he meant more to Bella than a rebound, he really thought that Edward would come to his senses and try to fix the relationship he had with Bella. But he didn't. How could he not after everything they had gone through? Jacob wasn't exactly complaining, though. It was just another thing to add to the long list of 'Jacob Good. Vampire Bad.'
