Maybe it was Alice's 'bad influence'. Maybe she had been far too excited to have Bella as a friend and dress her up like a doll. Either way, something had rubbed off on Edward. Which was how he found himself in Port Angeles.
The day was dry and cloudy, as per usual. Edward had been wandering around, looking for a store to buy something to keep in his car for Jacob to wear on the off chance Jacob wound up in a situation such as last week's. Or any of the Quiluetes, really. But mainly Jacob.
Despite Jacob's possible objection to anything more expensive than thrift store prices, it was rather distasteful to buy someone something second-hand. Besides, Edward could afford a few bits and pieces for his friend.
So far, it wasn't going so well. None of these places seemed quite right for what he was looking for. Of course, there was 'Newton's Olympic Outfitters' back at Forks, but quite frankly, Edward would rather die (again) than step foot in that store.
To be honest, Edward felt out of his depth here. He wasn't used to this — shopping for someone else. He couldn't think of how to act towards a friend, but you do nice things for them, right? Alice was the only example he had to go off of. Come to think of it, Edward hasn't had a friend... ever really, especially due to the Spanish Influenza. Sure, he has his siblings, but that was a different kind of friendship that isn't exactly 'friendship', more so comradery, if anything. A closeness only siblings share out of necessity. 'Brotherly love', and all that. Compared to that, he definitely did not see Jacob as a brother as he did so with Emmet and Jasper. He cringed at the thought. 'Friend' was a lovely, pleasant common ground.
Edward continued his leisurely stroll when he happened upon 'Brown's Outdoor'. An outfitter providing brand-name hiking gear, camping equipment and outerwear. Exactly what he was looking for. It was only two oversized t-shirts and two pairs of draw-string shorts he purchased, just to provide some modesty if any wolves needed a ride. They didn't need any additional warmth, so blankets and jackets weren't necessary. Edward didn't think they'd be too fussed about getting wet if it decided to rain, so he didn't get coats either, and shoes just seemed to be unimportant considering they ran around barefoot when they shifted back.
Satisfied with his finds, he thanked the employee and left with his goods to head back to the car. It was a simple act of kindness, if not for Edward's own sake to prevent riding around with naked people in his car. Maybe he'd bring up the idea of leaving some plastic boxes around the woods containing spare clothes.
He was putting the paper shopping bag in the trunk of his Volvo when a familiar scent hit him, standing out above human blood: a dog drenched in spring rain...accompanied by other wet dogs.
'...Oh shit. He's here. Go go go go go-' the familiar voice thought to itself.
Edward quickly closed the trunk and eagerly speed-walked away from the parking lot to follow the source of the scent. When he turned the corner, rounding the side of a restaurant and onto the sidewalk lined by storefronts, he was met with an also speed-walking Jacob — his back facing Edward — as well as two others he didn't know the name of yet.
"Jacob. Hi," Edward smiled.
The three boys stopped dead in their tracks and hunched their shoulders as if they'd been caught by a scolding parent. Jacob stiffly turned around and sighed, "Hello."
Jacob looked back to the others, "I'll catch you guys up, you go on ahead."
"You sure?" one of them asked with furrowed brows.
"It's fine, Quil," Jacob urged.
The two boys gave each other a nervous side glance and reluctantly nodded in agreement before throwing a glare towards the vampire and walking away.
