Just wanted to say a huge thank you to my mutual, Luxall, for helping me with the past few chapters as they had a thymectomy open chest surgery last year and provided me with the details of how the recovery process felt for them. They literally had their sternum broken open and plated back together, and It took them almost half a year to fully recover, so they know a thing or two about how Jacob felt. All of the descriptions of Jacob's pain, feelings and how Edward helps Jacob take care of himself are from them. Please send Luxall a purple heart in the comments for not only their bravery but also their help in this story💜💜💜

(You can find Luxall on Instagram @luxall_ and Tumblr @armad1ld0. They have some amazing Jakeward art that you should check out!)

Enjoy!💜)

Day 2

"Your bones seemed to have fully healed, although you're still experiencing aches and pains," Carlisle explained, "You still might for another day or two, so I'd say to keep resting and not move around too much if possible. But hopefully, you should be up and running by next week. I'll leave the IV in for the rest of the day, and if you're feeling good enough by the end of tomorrow, I'll remove it the day after."

"Thank you, Carlisle," Jacob croaked. "And tell Esme I said thanks for the broth and flowers." He looked over to see Edward leaning above him to place the bouquet of purple, white and pink Gladioli in a vase on the windowsill above the bed. "I suppose I forgive you," Jacob grinned at Carlisle lopsidedly.

Esme had spent all of yesterday making a bone broth in hopes to speed up Jacob's healing process. Carlisle had delivered them that morning, along with a week's worth of clothing for Edward — some shirts belonging to Jacob anyway — with his toothbrush and a new set of medication and tools to hook Jacob up to.

"Will do," Carlisle nodded with a warm smile, "She and the family send their condolences."

Edward had spent the morning after Carlisle left feeding Jacob a shallow bowl of Esme's bone broth for breakfast — which Jacob devoured eagerly — and helped out around the house, washing the few dishes in the sink and helping Billy tidy up the house a bit, allowing Jacob to sleep in for another hour.

The pain seemed to be at its worst and most obvious during the morning after Jacob woke. His joints stiff and creaky, his lung brushing up against his ribcage like a stick to an iron fence, and the crushing pain of what felt like his bones collapsing in on themselves and every crack that was once there had been cracked open again. But as the day progressed and more morphine flushed his system and salve seeped into his skin, it dulled.

Once Edward had finished up the house chores, he entered Jacob's room to see him awake.

'My dearest nurse slash etcetera etcetera, would you be up for helping me shower? I feel gross.' Jacob asked hesitatingly, not wanting to be a bother. '... And maybe help me piss again.'

"My love, anything for you," Edward said in an overly romantic way with a cheeky grin.

Edward detached Jacob from the empty IV and grabbed the towel from the desk chair before scooping Jacob up into his arms gently. He stripped Jacob of his boxers and bandages completely once in the bathroom and repeated yesterday's process, brushed their teeth together in the sink and shuffled themselves over to the shower.

Edward slid the rickety shower door open and helped Jacob sit down on Billy's shower stool with his back facing Edward. Edward leaned over from around Jacob to grab the shower head and switched the water on, changing it to a cool temperature and ran the water over his hand to check that the temperature was just right.
