It was the morning before the day of the battle.

Edward, Jacob and Bella packed up their things and placed them in the trunk. When Bella took a step to get in the shotgun seat, Jacob had beat her to it, plopping himself down leisurely in his rightful spot. Bella stood by the back of the car for a second to reprogram her brain and get in the back seat.

The car ride was full of cheesy 2000s pop music, 'Closer' by Ne Yo blasting on the radio because Edward was simply too weak to deny Jacob his nostalgia. Jacob sang along happily, as usual, with his horrific dance moves and the other two laughing at him. At least it helped lighten the mood, practically marching to their imminent death.

Edward ignored Jacob's 'fuck-me' eyes and body rolls to the music.

The drive to the mountain range mellowed out eventually. The three of them settled as their destination drew closer, and the seriousness kicked in.

Soon enough, the other cars could be seen on a gravel clearing surrounded by trees, hidden away at the bottom of the hiking trail. The Cullens had already taken their position at the field where the battle will be taking place, ready at any moment for it to start. The fight won't be till tomorrow, according to Alice's vision, but it was better to be safe than sorry.

Edward rolled the car to a stop beside the others. They took their things out of the trunk and started the hike up the trail. Bella split off from the two when they neared the field, drawing her scent toward it by pricking her finger and smearing her blood on the bark of trees and evergreen leaves.

Jacob had gone off to do the same further up the mountain. By taking a piss.

"They won't wanna get anywhere near us when they smell it," Jacob had argued. Edward joked how it was just Jacob marking his territory. Jacob joked back that if he wanted to mark his territory, he would have pissed on Edward. The conversation ended there. Thankfully Alice called.

Edward saw Bella come out from behind a tree, smearing the last drop of her blood on its rough cedar leaf.

"You're going overboard," he noticed out loud.

"If this is all I can contribute, I wanna be thorough," she explained, looking down at her irritated fingertip and squeezing it, seeing the smallest drop of blood rise to the surface.

"The newborns will be frantic," Edward smirked sarcastically, taking her hand and examining it.

"it's ok. Don't make yourself uncomfortable," Bella acknowledged, trying to slip her hand away.

Edward gripped it a little tighter and kept her hand still.

"It doesn't bother me anymore," he said, pulling out a band-aid from his pocket, removing its paper cover to wrap it around the bleeding finger, and placing the discarded paper back into his pocket.

It didn't matter who Bella was to him anymore, it still irked him to see the clumsy girl get hurt.

"Since when?" Bella looked up to Edward curiously, dropping her hand and resting them in her pockets.
