Wolfie yawned. It was getting quite late, and them and Gwen had spent the afternoon watching movies, playing Uno and everything else. Wolfie checked the time. 20:30.
"Gwen, don't you think it's time to go to sleep?"
"No way! We haven't seen your favourite movie yet!"
"We've watched it a million times dear. You've seen it all."
"What about when I blink? It skips some and I miss it." Wolfie chuckled. They felt like they were raising a child instead of looking after a 19 year old.
"Why are you laughing?" Gwen whined. "I'm being serious, blinking makes you miss scenes."
"You don't miss anything when you blink."
"True," Gwen admitted. "But I like watching things that you like watching! I can't help it." Wolfie's heart melted at the comment; Even though the film was made for little children, Gwen was still willing to watch them over and over again. She was adorable. They were grateful they ran into her.
"Hellooooo?" Gwen said, waving her hand in front of Wolfies face, causing them to shake their head, snapping back into reality.
"Hm?" Wolfie mumbled confused.
"I was just going to ask a quick question but you slept with your eyes open? Do you always do that or is it new?"
"It new, but it isn't painful."
"Hmph," Gwen mumbled angrily. "Fine, I'm just trying to look after you"
"I'm supposed to be looking after you here, young lady!" The small face of anger that appeared on Gwen's face was more adorable than frightening.
"Anyway, let me ask you my question or you can forget it."
"Go on then." Wolfie laughed.
"How did you know I was hurt, and in that specific alleyway?"
The look of triumph slowly wiped away from Wolfie's face, and was replaced with uncertainty.
"Well.. uh.. you see.."
Gwen waited, almost impatiently.
"Well.. I sensed you.. that you were there!" Wolfie exclaimed, although Gwen looked unsure.
"You stuttered," Gwen said. "Don't lie to me, Wolfie." The seriousness I her voice rattled through Wolfie's head, as if it was a cogwheel, turning around and around.
"Sorry, i- I don't know how to explain it-" They stuttered.
"Take your time. We aren't in a hurry." Gwen said.
Wolfie took a deep breath and started explaining.
"I'm not exactly human, I was sent to work as Hell's slave, but I was sent back to earth to protect someone that matched your description, though they never got to give me the name. I'm not even sure if you're the one I'm meant to be protecting! All they gave me was parts of your past that could potentially help me find you."
"What were the events?" Gwen asked. "I'll say if I have or have not encountered them."
"Ok then. Abandoned by half of your family?"
"Yep."
"Sexually harassed by many members of family and partners?"
"Yep."
"Forced to leave your home from human invaders who tried to use your species as testing subjects to replace animal testing and animal cruelty?"
Gwen was hesitant, but soon responded with a quiet "yes".
"Sorry if I mentioned anything that was sensitive to you." Wolfie apologised.
"That's fine." Gwen said
"Maybe if I just asked if you were OK, you would've been a bit braver, and--" Wolfie started, but Gwen put her hand on theirs which made them go silent.
"It's more than words, dear. You decided to help, and that's the best that anyone has done in years!" Gwen assured. Wolfie smiled at her.
"Thank you for believing in me. I'll repay your trust by keeping you safe, and helping you grow strong in your role as guardian angel."
Gwen laughed at what was obviously an inside joke between them.
"So, who are you protecting tonight?"
"Oh no!" Wolfie shook their head frantically. "If I tell you its a secret, can we not talk about it anymore?"
"I guess so," Gwen said.
"Good." Wolfie breathed out. "Now lets get ready for bed." Wolfie stood up and held out a hand to help Gwen off the couch.
Wolfie went to change into their pajamas, leaving Gwen alone to clean up after them. When they came back downstairs, they were wearing pyjama pants and a tshirt. Gwen raised an eyebrow in surprise, but quickly forgot about it when she saw Wolfie's smile.
Wolfie sat down on the couch once again, this time next to Gwen. They scooted towards her slightly before putting an arm around her shoulders.
She turned her head slightly to get a good look at them; Her eyes flitted down from their eyes to their mouth then back.
Their hair fell messily across their face as they leaned against Gwen. She reached out and moved it behind Wolfie's ear, smiling softly as she did so.
"Thank you for trusting me with such important information." she whispered, stroking their cheek gently. They hummed softly. "You should really try sleeping now." Wolfie closed their eyes and nodded.
They fell asleep quickly, with a content sigh and small twitch. Gwen continued to stroke their hair and smiled warmly. She wasn't used to seeing them relax so completely, and found herself loving every second of it.
She couldn' help herself, and gently pulled away. Her hands travelled down their arms until their fingers entwined together, and squeezed lightly. She smiled again when Wolfie stirred slightly. Their grip tightened slightly before loosening again.
Gwen stayed that way for a while longer, staring at her sleeping companion. She traced their features with her gaze; they seemed calm, peaceful. Her expression softened as she watched them.
The light filtering through the curtains hit their skin beautifully, making them appear soft. Gwen wanted to lean in closer and kiss their forehead, but she knew that she would wake them. Instead, she brushed her lips across Wolfie's nose, and giggled softly at how their face scrunched up.
She leaned in to brush a strand of hair away from the others face and kissed their forehead. This time however, as Gwen sat back, she saw that Wolfie was staring right at her. She gasped quietly and hid her face with her hands. She heard Wolfie giggle slightly.
After a minute, she dared to peek. Wolfie was still staring at her, their face filled with laughter. She blushed and dropped her eyes.
"Stop staring at me like that." Gwen grumbled.
"Make me." Wolfie smirked playfully.
"I'M GOING TO KILL YOU!" Gwen screamed, throwing herself towards her attacker.
A scream left her as Wolfie grabbed her wrists. Before either could react, Gwen jumped on top of Wolfie and covered their mouth.
"What's wrong with you?!" she hissed.
"I want food." Wolfie grinned and pushed Gwen away. She sighed as she fell onto the floor. Wolfie chuckled as they walked over to the fridge and opened it.
"Did you eat?" They questioned, as they looked through the contents. They noticed that they had a few vegetables and breads.
"Yeah." Gwen answered quietly. "Can you make me something to eat too, please?"
"Sure." Wolfie answered, as they rummaged through the cupboards until they found something that was suitable for two people, and brought it back to where Gwen was sitting. She stared at Wolfie, waiting. Once she was satisfied with how much food they'd managed to fit into one bowl, she ate silently. She didn't bother to tell Wolfie to stop being cute as they ate, instead she just let them enjoy themselves.
Afterwards she cleared their bowl and set their dishes in the sink before moving over to stand beside them.
"Hey, Wolfie?"
"Hmm?" They replied.
"Thanks for today." She grinned as she wrapped her arms around Wolfie and hugged them tight.
They chuckled quietly as they returned the hug.
"Anytime, dear." Gwen felt them place a kiss on the top of her head. She nuzzled them happily, and let them take her upstairs to bed. After changing into their sleepwear, they crawled into their bed and lay down next to each other. Gwen cuddled up to them, wrapping her arms around their waist. Wolfie placed their head on hers gently, letting Gwen snuggle closer.
Gwen let her eyes shut close as she finally began to feel sleepy.
"Do you think I was the one you're talking about? Do you think I could be the one your meant to protect?" Gwen asked.
"Well, I think you were." Wolfie said. "I've seen your strength, your resilience, the way you fight for those who deserve your help."
"So what is it? A secret mission?"
"Not quite. I've found some things out that I'd rather you didn't learn." They said cryptically.
"Like what?"
Wolfie remained silent, so Gwen decided to ask another question.
"Will you ever tell me?"
Wolfie sighed.
"No."
"But why not?"
They rolled on their side so that Gwen was facing them.
"There's no need for you to know, I promise." They said softly.
"Fine." Gwen conceded.
"Good." They gave her a quick peck before rolling back over to face away from her. "Get some rest, Gwen."
"Sleep well." Gwen muttered sleepily.
After about twenty minutes, Wolfie spoke up again: "Don' worry, I won't keep secrets from you anymore."
Gwen turned back around again so that she was looking directly at Wolfie. She didn't answer at first, but eventually replied with "Alright." And then she fell asleep.
