Masks cover our faces
From the sickly fog
That fills germ-infested places.
These protectors make it hard to breathe,
Which becomes an obstacle,
Especially in the summer heat.
People say they feel constrained.
Their breathless mouths fill
With curses and angry complaints.
Still, they keep the virus out of our lungs
Because feeling like there are elephants on our chests
Would not be fun.
Wait, but weren't we already wearing masks?
We already use
Them to hide from society
And its judgmental views.
Several people have remained constrained
Because they wear forced smiles,
Trying to convince themselves they're okay.
Before COVID-19, it was already hard to breathe
Since many are trapped in the shadows,
feeling scared and unseen.
A lot of us wish we could take the masks off,
But if we don't change for ourselves,
They'll stay on, making them harder to come off.
Don't you see?
When you think, compare, and contrast,
You'll realize that there's not much of a difference
When wearing a mask.
Inside or out.
