Danny and I Skype every night before we go to bed, telling each other how much we miss the other. It's only been a few days but it feels like an eternity.
Robert, my dad is going to come over for dinner tonight. Hopefully he won't think Lauren is my lesbian lover. He always thought my rag-tag tomboy look was because I secretly liked girls. While it might have been true a while ago, I think my sexuality is tall YouTube gamers who are Jewish.
I put the fish on the stove, tonight we'll be eating a white fish fillet with a white wine lemon sauce, some rice, and green beans. I loved this as a kid.
I start making the lemon sauce, just like my mom did when I was little. Some shallots, a little lemon zest, a cup or so of lemon juice. Oh my god, it will be fantastic. Dad is going to be here at six, the time we had dinner when I was a kid. This meal is bringing back so much nostalgia. It's twenty to five so the meal will be done right around six. My fathers knuckles rasp on the door.
"I got it!" I yell, just in cause Lauren was going to open the door. I swing the door wide open, grabbing my dad in a big hug. I'm just about the same size as him now and it feels good. If I had heals I would be taller than him.
I invite him in, telling him that he is a bit early and that dinner isn't ready yet.
"I know, I just wanted to have time to talk to you."
"You can come in the kitchen and tell me how freaking delicious my fish is going to be." Robert doesn't like cussing... Or anything outside his little Christian prospective. I'm really good at hiding my beliefs from him.
"Alright. It does smell really nice actually."
"Like my cooking would be anything but absolutely amazing."
We both laugh, knowing that my cooking is rubbish.
"So... Where is your roommate?"
"Oh Lauren? She's upstairs I think. I can go get her."
"No no, I was just wondering if she was eating with us."
"Yea, she lives here." I laugh.
"Alright. So how's life been in your world?"
"Actually? I'm sure you've seen the news."
"I don't watch the news anymore, to many sad things. Why were you on the news? We're you hurt?" Robert eyes me with the look of a concerned parent.
"No no no! I'm fine. It was actually something really cool."
"Well? Spill the beans." My dad smiles.
"I won the lottery." I state proudly.
"Oh my god honey! Why didn't you call me? That's wonderful!"
"Hehe. Sorry. But yea, it's great. We, Lauren and I, are selling this place and moving in with some more of our friends."
"Christian friends?" He asks hopefully. "You know how worldly people drag down perfectly good Christians with their drugs and premarital sex."
"No!" My voice is layered with heaven sarcasm. "They're a satanist cult, we just sacrificed the blood of a newborn last week."
"Alright, alright. I'm just looking out for my baby girl."
"I know, but I think I can handle myself." I laugh. Question avoided.
"Your still my little baby girl." Robert grips my in another tight hug.
"Yea yea, stop hugging me I have to take this fish off the stove. He lets me go and I put together plates for everyone.
"Alright, you can take out your own. I'll take Lauren's and mine." I hand my dad his plate and he walks into the dining room, sitting down at one end of the table. "Be right back, getting my roommate." I smile and dash upstairs. I knock on Lauren's door and she opens it.
"Oh what is that? It smells great."
"It's fish. Can you promise not to swear around my dad?"
"Yea I can stop swearing right now."
"You sure? We walked by that little kid the other day and you dropped the f-bomb on him twice."
"Alright, I got it. Now come on, I'm starving!"
We sit down together and my dad grabs our hands.
"Someone say prayer." He encourages.
I sigh internally, not this shit again. Externally I smile. "Sure." I clear my throat, getting ready for at least two minutes of food getting cold.
