Marc entered first. He was both happy and excited. All the stress of the day before had been swept away. He knew deep down that he would have to face it again on Monday, but on this Saturday afternoon he felt calm. His family was there, falsely relaxed. He knew them well. He knew they were eager to officially meet Gavin. His mother had conveyed the message that he considered him his "important person". He went to kiss them while Gavin stayed behind. He glanced at him. His lover was nervous but his mother stood up to welcome him with open arms.
— Come in, my boy. It's for me ? It is beautiful !
She smiled at him and took the flower from his hands. She patted his cheek.
— You took the pot! You did well ! cut flowers make me sad.
Gavin forced himself to smile at the small woman.
— They are 'desert roses.' Their color reminded me of the suit you wore at the festival and... it was the prettiest in the store. I'm sorry, I wish I had done more and...
— You have done very well in the time that my stupid son left you. I love it !
She put the plant on the small table and took his arm.
— Here is my husband.
The man stood up. Marc resembled him in the shape of his face and expressive eyes. He wore glasses and was shorter and bald. He smiled at Gavin without touching him, much more introverted than his son. In this Gavin understood him.
— Call me Pa, it will be easier than sir.
Gavin swallowed his saliva, he felt like he was being treated like a son. Ma continued.
— And the most beautiful girl in the world, Judith.
Judith greeted him with a wave of her hand. She was the female version of Marc. She held out a plate to him on the table.
— I made cookies, take one.
As Gavin reached out to grab one, Marc stopped him.
— If you don't want to be sick, don't eat it!
Judith turned straight away.
— Stopped ! my cookies are very good! Ma tell him they are good!
Mark crossed his arms.
— I have experienced enough your cooking to know what I say! She's a witch!
— You...fake brother! That was before! I make good cookies now! Ma !
Seeing that her mother was only laughing, she pointed an imperious finger at Gavin and then at the plate of cookies.
— Gavin, eat that cookie!
Marc grabbed Gavin by the hips to pull him against him.
— Gavin, don't eat that cookie!
Gavin didn't know what to do and ended up being contaminated by Ma's laughter. Ma wiped her eyes.
— That's enough you two! Come here Gavin. They are always like that. Eat a cookie, whatever Marc says, they're very good.
She made him sit on the couch next to her and handed him the plate. He hesitated but took it anyway as Marc and Judith continued to argue.
Surprisingly for Gavin, thanks to Ma's ease, everything went well. He quickly felt at ease and accepted as if he were already a member of the family. There were no prying questions about their status or relationship. He was with their son, nameless, but as a matter of fact.
