Gavin was brought to the security post. They took photos of his wounds, treated him and gave him a hot drink which he did not touch as he waited for the inspectors. These arrived within ten minutes. He heard the woman screaming in an adjoining room. He didn't want to hear her words. When Pierre and Christophe arrived, he did not want to listen to their words. His whole body ached from stress not to mention his superficial scrapes and scratches. He didn't want to talk. He couldn't stand the noise anymore. Seeing his condition, the inspectors did not insist. When they wanted to call his parents to pick him up, Gavin stiffened even more and in a broken voice told them not to. Christophe shook his head.
— You're in no condition to drive, Gavin. You can barely hold a cup of coffee.
— I'm fine ! I'll be fine in a few minutes, I...
Pierre continued.
— You are shocked, which is normal. This condition should not be underestimated. You need to rest in a place that is familiar and safe for you. Don't be left alone, Gavin.
— I'd rather be alone than with my family, Inspector.
— A friend then?
Gavin shook his head.
— No more. Bryan is traveling overseas and...
Peter arrived at this answer.
— I'll take care of it, Detectives.
All the way to Marc and Gavin's loft, Peter was casting worried glances at his young protege. This one was locked in silence and obviously didn't want to come out. As he pulled into the private parking lot, Peter insisted one last time.
— Are you sure you want to be here? The apartment is empty, and I would be more relieved if you stayed with me.
Gavin smiled at his mentor.
— I need to be here, Peter. This is my home, our home. I need...
He took a deep breath and blinked on the verge of tears.
— I want to be here.
Peter sighed, defeated. He squeezed his shoulder gently.
— I understand, Gavin. I leave you then?
Gavin forced himself to smile at him.
— It will be fine. I'll call you if I have any concerns.
— You promise? I can stay and...
— It's okay Peter. Please.
— Call me.
— I promise.
Gavin hurriedly left the car and his friend's worried gaze. He went up to the top floor and entered the empty apartment. Darkness greeted him. The only light was that of the city. His heart sank. Tears welled up but he forced them back for the first time. He went straight into the bedroom. The empty bed made his heart ache. The adrenaline of the past few hours was quickly waning and he began to shake nervously. He couldn't calm down and struggled with his clothes to get them off. The bed welcomed him and he took Marc's pillow between his arms, burying his face in the cool fabric, breathing in Marc's scent deeply and the tears flowed without him being able to stop them. Big sobs of anxiety took his breath away. All the pent-up feelings of the last few months came out one after another, completely draining him of his strength. He wanted Marc. He wanted his presence, his voice, his smell... he wanted him to hold him in his arms and drive away his demons, his fears, his anxieties and give him a breath of life. He ended up falling asleep with a feeling of bitter emptiness deep in his heart.
