"Hmm, I think I'm gonna try out for the big fish! Maybe rank 10-20?" Misaki mumbles while tapping his finger gently against his chin as if he was thinking about a puzzle.

Kei beside him just huffs and Raiden on the other side of the desk at the cafeteria lets out a small chuckle, "You really think anyone above rank 50 doesn't have an endear?"

Misaki lifts his eyebrows in wonder and nods a little, "Hmm you might have a point... but I won't talk down my luck just yet! I heard there's a big ceremony at the palace this weekend so it will be mingling with supremes in the streets."

It's true, but it's not something unusual. On the contrary, the castle might be holding a little too many parties.

"Is it ranking month already?" Kei asks and softly takes a bite of the candy bar he just bought.

"No, I think it's just a birthday party for someone," Misaki explains.

The biggest ceremony is held in the 'ranking month' which is a month where the supremes are ranked in order of power. The strongest is ranked 1, the weakest is ranked 1000. There are more supremes than this, but you have to earn your way into the ranking system in the first place. Once you do, a tattoo similar to the ones on the endears will appear on the supreme's wrist and show a number.

Many would probably wonder why there's something like a ranking system, but if you were a supreme and lived for around 8 thousand to 10 thousand years, you would probably get pretty bored too, right?

Therefore, the queen of their country, who is also a supreme, created the rankings with her powers. This was a way to keep the supremes entertained and make them stronger.

Strange things happen when people get bored.

The queen herself is not the strongest, she's actually not even in the rankings. Kings and queens are chosen the traditional way, so ranking does not matter.

Supremes have gained all types of superpowers through time, one stronger than the other. Some are just born lucky and are high in the ranks from the beginning, some fight their way up with training and others simply settle with being outside the rankings and live a somewhat normal life.

Raiden doesn't care about the ranking system or the entire month for that matter, so he doesn't even know who's at number one. Not that it matters, but everyone else seems to be very interested in it. It's kind of like the supremes are celebrities. Some people care about them a lot, others don't keep track of what is going on with them.

Raiden is one of the latter, but Misaki and Kei do tend to keep track sometimes. Mostly, Raiden just hears Misaki drool over some random supreme in the higher rankings and calls it a day.

The ranks are decided simply from your ability to outpower everyone else and the physical aspects. You can show this through battle, but actually, the queen has the ability to rank people simply through her powers.

These powers are very unnatural, but they are an extreme mutation of humans, meaning that they are somehow still a physical part of the body. Therefore, the strength a supreme possesses can come out in numbers, just like with statistics over for example muscle mass or contraction strength in the muscles that are studied in humans. The better the number, the better the ranking.

Raiden never got clever on the biology behind it, so he doesn't know the details. But all he knows is that the powers are close to limitless when it comes to the range of differences, but in the physical aspect, they start weak and slowly grow stronger - just like the human body.

With this description, it sounds like they are in a superhero movie or something. Might as well be.

To go back to the ranking system; considering that these powers are somehow a part of the mind or the body, they can be trained. So, it can be entertaining to see how well the supremes do. Some even make bets to vote on who is in the top 100 every 6 months.
