Season 3 ages, when school starts. If Billy were still alive and if Lucas and Max weren't together just yet. This was a request from @slutforblackpanthers so thank you for that <3
  || Max's POV ||
  Max slowly walked through the halls, grumpily listening to Lucas drown on and on about this new girl Kaylee in his science class.
  "..soo smart too. She finished the homework in class, without asking the teacher for help!"
  "Yeah, yeah uh huh that's so great." Max rolled her eyes and turned the corner to head outside. She had 6th period study hall, which she rarely attended, so she decided instead of hiding out in the bathroom, she was just going to sit outside at a picnic table or something.
  She'd been listening to Lucas talk about this girl for the whole day, and it made her so annoyed and sick at the same time, which to be honest, annoyed her much more.
  Sitting down at her desk, all max could think about was how Lucas described this girl so enthusiastically, like she was the most amazing person in the world. It made max feel this uncomfortable bubbling sensation in her stomach, one she didn't understand. Why would I care? It's not like we're together or anything. The thought made Max's stomach churn. Whatever. He can talk about any girl as much as he wants, I don't care at all.
|| Time skip to later that day ||
Lucas walked through the halls, looking around for Max. He hadn't seen her since she was heading for Study Hall. When they were walking in the hallway, she seemed off, like she was annoyed. That was kind of a default for Max but this seemed different.
Pushing his was through the front doors of the school, Lucas finally saw Max sitting in a picnic table on the grass. She held her head in her hands and was pushing a pebble that was on the table with her pencil. Huh, that's weird. What's she doing out here?
Lucas was about to walk over to Max when someone walked out in front of him. Immediately, Lucas recognized the girl as Kaylee.
  "Lucas! It's sooo crazy bumping into each other here! How are you?" Kaylee asked in her usual high pitched voice.
  "Hey Kaylee, I'm good. How are you?" Lucas replied, looking into her green eyes.
  "Oh I'm great! It's a little weird being the new kid but everyone here is so nice, especially you." The blonde girl pointed with one finger at Lucas, a soft smile playing at her lips. Lucas smiled back and replied, "Ha, thanks I guess?" He chuckled and remembered why he came out here. Looking past Kaylee, Lucas could see Max in the same place she was before, but this time she was staring directly at him, though she was too far away to see her expression.
  "Hey Kay, I've got to go," Lucas started, his gaze not leaving the red head. "I'll talk to you tomorrow, okay?" Kaylee followed his gaze and saw Max looking at them. Instantly, she got a look of understanding plastered across her face.
  "Okay, see ya later Lucas!" With that she walked away, leaving Lucas to walk over to Max. But to his surprise, he could see her walking quickly away, in the direction of the parking lot. Jesus, she's going fast. What got her in a rush? Lucas thought as he watched the girl speed away.
|| Max's POV ||
Why would I ever have to know anything about the Battle of Lexington? How would that even help me in real world? Max though bitterly as she stared at her history book. How would- Max's thought was interrupted by something catching her eye. Looking up from the book, Max saw Lucas standing outside the school, looking at her. She was about to wave him over when a familiar blonde girl walked in front of Lucas, blocking Max from his gaze. Immediately Max felt a cold, uncomfortable feeling creep all over her body. The two chatted with each other for a bit, and Lucas seemed to be in a good mood, unlike Max. Of course he's in a good mood, Kaylee's with him.
The two talked for a bit longer, but Man couldn't stand watching this scene play out any longer. Slamming her book closed, she stuffed it in her backpack and started to the parking lot. Max glanced down at her watch. 3:30, Billy won't be here until 4:00. Well, whatever. I'm not waiting for him to get here. I don't think I can stand watching whatever that was for any longer. Dropping her skateboard on the sidewalk, Max pushed off and was on her way back home.
After a long skate home, Max was relived to see her street sign coming up ahead. But her relief soon fizzled out when she remembered the girl that made Lucas so excited. Kaylee. Max thought wirily. Why was Lucas so happy to talk about her? Does he like her better than me? Of course he does, what am I thinking?
Fresh, tears burned in Max's eyes, blurring her vision. She almost lost her balance and fell a few times before blinking them away. Why would Lucas date me..if he had such a better, prettier option right in front of him?
Pushing her way through the front door of her house, Max was immediately met with the extremely angry face of Billy.
"Where were you? I was waiting for 30 minutes!" Billy screamed angrily, his face red with fury.
"I-I decided to walk home." Max tried not to show her fear. This was exactly what she had hoped wouldn't happen. Billy stepped forward menacingly, Max stepped back.
"You couldn't have told me first?!" He shouted in the red heads face.
"I didn't think you'd answer If I had called anyway, you would have probably been in some random girls bed. Who are you dating again? Nikki? Or was it Sam?" Max gritted her teeth, talking in a half sarcastic tone. She immediately regretted saying that when she saw the fury blazing in her older brothers eyes.
"Oh you little shi-" Billy slapped Max across the face. Wincing at the contact, Max shrank back towards the front door. But before she could escape out the doorway Billy had grabbed her arm harshly and dragged her away. Kicking and thrashing, Max tried her best to wriggle out of her brothers grasp, but to no avail.
|| I don't rlly want to get into the details of it all, but I'm sure you get what happened ||
Pulling her knees to her chest, Max felt numb to the touch. Mustering up all the strength she had, Max pushed herself off of the floor and half walked half crawled over to her mirror to inspect the damage. That day she had only been wearing a t-shirt and some shorts so there wasn't much to protect her skin from the attacks. There were abrasions all along her arms and legs, and probably her back. Small cuts could be seen spotting around the abrasions from Billy's rings. But what made tears well once more in Max's eyes, was her face. A large abrasion could be easily seen on the side of her face. Cuts spotted around the red patch and it already looked to be turning blue and purple.
Max could have thought about a lot of things at this moment. She could have thought about how much she hated her brother. Or how much pain she was in. But the only thing, the only person she could think about right now was Kaylee. How could Max even compete with some one like her? She was gorgeous, Max was very aware. She had soft, light skin. Deep green eyes. Wavy blonde hair. Perfect body. Max had no chance to be with Lucas if she was in school. I..I have no chance with Lucas now that Kaylee's here..and I don't want Lucas to have to settle for second best..or not even second best. Max let the tears that had been threatening to spill from her eyes stream down her red cheeks. Slowing climbing into her bed, Max let her tears soak her pillow and she wept. She ignored the nagging pain she felt from her bruises. She ignored Neil and her Mom shouting their home from the front door. She ignored it all. But one thought kept replaying in Max's mind over and over again. I will never be good enough for him..or anyone..
a/n: I rlly hope I didn't butcher this request, and if I did, I'm sooo sorry. I kinda like this one actually so I'll probably make a pt 2, but that's not guaranteed. Also, sorry this is like, 4 months late, hehe..ANYWAYS I'm going to sleep. Love y'all 💕
