"guess who, max!" i let out am audible groan, not moving a muscle from my hospital bed. "well that's not a nice way to greet me is it?"
though my vision was fogged up by grayish clouds, i could see lucas's figure move across to my side of the bed. i rolled my almost sightless eyes.
"come on max, nurses say you've got to sit up. they tell me you've been bumming around all day." i vaguely felt his hands under my armpits helping me up. i feebly helped, but in my mind, it was all me.
"the nurses can go suck it."
"max." lucas warned.
"i'm joking, jesus." i shifted my sore shoulders against the pillow, watching the blob that is lucas moving around the room. "there's not much i can do anyway, what do you expect me to do?" i lifted both my casted forearms barely above the sheets.
"the exercises the physical therapist gave you maybe?" i scoffed.
"ive decided today is my break day."
"is that so?"
"uh huh."
"well if that's the case," i could hear the amused in his voice. "let's go on a ride." consider my interest peaked.

after the chaos of getting into my wheelchair, lucas wheeled me all around the hospital, stopping in the cafeteria for ice cream of course.
"evening maxine!" someone called from the right. i recognized the voice as nurse malorie. i gave a wave in the general direction, a spoonful of ice cream preventing me from using my voice.
"hey max! hitched a ride did ya?" i recognized jaylin, the girl from 104.
"you know me, you think a couple broken bones are gonna stop me?" i heard her laugh before her voice was drowned out by the rest of the hospitals chaos.
i felt the cool breeze of the evening air hit my face as we made our way outside. the soft hum of the traffic and late birds chirping created a symphony that knows no equal.
who knew i was able to be so positive.
"so max, i completely forgot during the craziness of the past couple weeks, but we never got to go to that movie." lucas started after a few minutes.
"huh. i guess we didn't." i realized, thinking back in the moment lucas had asked me to the movies. that was before. . . everything.
"well, maybe we can rain check?" i could feel my heart flutter with a few stray butterflies,
"yeah, rain check."
