"She doesn't exactly act like a princess, does she?" The youngest of the monkey tribe asked with a tilt of his head.
The shadows had tied you to a tree despite your best efforts. You sucked in deep breaths in an attempt to regain the energy you had spent in your thrashing.
"Nah M.k that's how all women are, over hysterical and noisy." The Monkey King interjected leaning against M.k's shoulder. Before shooting you a smirk. "Not to mention weak."
Macaque entered just then rubbing his jaw.
"I'll have to disagree on that last point. I think she hits harder than you do."
Monkey King aimed a glare at his brother and folded his arms while M.k appeared to be stifling a laugh.
Your gaze flicked between them as you set to moving your wrists behind your back. If you were careful, you could untie yourself while they were talking.
"And what exactly do you plan on doing with her?" The Monkey King asked. "She wouldn't make a decent servant, she's not even scared of you."
You glanced around the lair while you worked the ropes cataloging your best path of escape. To your right was a door opening. And only a few feet to your left was a table a few knifes and other eating utensils. The silver of the blades in particular winked at you with the waning sunlight that spilled in from the entrance to your right.
Macaque chuckled scattering your thoughts.
"Well now I'll just have to fix that." Macaque's eyes flicked to a dark purple and turned to you.
Instantly, you stilled. Had he seen your attempt to escape?
He stepped towards you and your gut churned. The meaning of his words sinking in now. You frantically tugged against the ropes trying to loosen the knot you'd been working at.
Your pulse thrummed as he reached for you just as the knot gave way.
His eyes widened as you dashed to the left.
You grabbed a knife and threw it at Macaque only for him to fall into a shadow below him.
This was just what you had hoped would happen. Snatching up a second knife you dashed out the door and ducked behind a tree. In that instant the Monkey King and M.k dashed out the door after you.
Taking deep breaths to still your rapid pounding heart. You could do this. You could make it out of the forest and get help. You took in one final breath to fortify your resolve then took off in a sprint of the opposite direction you had seen the Monkey King and his protege go.
Precious sunlight retreated far too quickly leaving you in growing darkness. You attempted to be as quiet as possible as you navigated the forest. But the trees seemed to be getting thicker the further you went. Still you didn't dare turn back.
Macaque's look flickered to life in your mind and you had to press a hand to your chest to ease the frantic pounding that erupted from the thought.
You pressed your back to a large tree trunk resting a moment.
"There has to be a village close by." You whispered.
Macaque's laughter filled the darkness surrounding you, sending your blood to freezing in your veins.
"Not for miles yet, princess." He spoke just behind and above you now as he leaned out of your shadow. "But don't worry, I know somewhere you can stay." You felt his hand rest on your shoulder and your nerves spurred to action.
With a scream you whirled and slashed at him blindly.
Macaque released a heart stopping scream as your blade met his right eye. He fell from the shadow and hit the ground on his knees.
You stumbled backwards an sense of growing dread filling your stomach. Your ankle hit a tree root knocking you to the ground.
"Heh you know what, Wukong is right." He chuckled as he pressed himself up. "You aren't scared, But you're going to be."
You scrambled backwards trying to get up but you weren't able to before he lunged at you.
A scream escaped you before a massive wall of flames erupted between you and Macaque.
The black Monkey hit the ground just before the flames and brought his arms up to shield his face from the heat.
In that instant someone knelt by your side holding out a red overcoat.
"Put this on." Red Son instructed forcefully as your gaze met his. "I wouldn't want you burned.
Macaque yelled over the flames.
"This won't be our last meeting, princess." His violet eyes shone seemingly battling the glow of the flames. "A little samadhi fire won't save you."
Red Son put the overcoat over your shoulders and stepped Infront of you. And if you weren't mistaken Macaque actually flinched backwards slightly.
"So you want to be a villain? Let me show you what happens to villains."
Macaque stepped backward as Red Son's flames surged at him an then all in a moment, Macaque had vanished.
By his shadows or by the flames you were unsure. But as your betrothed looked at you over his shoulder your felt your heart leap in your chest.
"Are you injured?"
Slowly, your mind tried to function, to grasp words. But it was hard with a wall of searing flame not far from you.
"N-No."
Red Son seemed to watch you a moment his eyes calculating. Then with a flick of his wrist the flames vanished.
"I apologize for taking so long. These forests are deep and difficult to navigate." He explained walking over to you before offering you a hand to help you up.
You accepted the hand and started to stand before the question you had finally brought to mind sprang from your lips.
"How did you find ach-!" You gasped as the weight you pressed on your ankle sent shards of pain rocketing through your leg before it gave under you. Your weight fell forward and Red Son caught you with an arm around your waist.
He paused a moment.
"May I-" He made a motion that indicated him lifting you.
"Oh...yeah." You agreed.
With your affirmation he lifted you bridal style and walked towards his castle.
"I headed to flower fruit mountain, as the legends say, but I ultimately heard Macaque's scream." Red Son explained.
"Now, I'll need you to relax. It will take most of my concentration to get us back to the castle and to not-" He glanced down at you for a moment then looked away. "Well burn you."
"What?!"
"Princess, please. If Wukong gets here we will be in significant trouble."
Taking a steadying breath you nodded and relaxed against his chest. It was surprisingly easy to do considering how it radiated heat.
And then the air around you erupted into an swirling inferno.
