A new life

Scarlett's POV

I see Y/n starting to cry after seeing the picture that Rose drew her. Rose takes her into a hug and I take the picture from her. For the first time seeing what Rose put down on the paper. It is a picture of all of us, Y/N included, above her head is written the word sister with an arrow pointing to her.

"Rose, darling why did you call Y/N sister in the picture." I ask, confused because we had not yet told her.

"Oh, I heard you and dad talk about it this morning. Is it true that she is going to be staying here?" she asks, eyes full of hope. Letting go of the frozen Y/N that has tears streaming down her face.

"Y/N, what is wrong?" The little girl asks, afraid now that she did something wrong or that she hurt her sister. It seems to snap Y/N out of the state she was in, she quickly wipes the tears off her face and puts on a smile.

"Nothing, it was just unexpected. Thank you for this picture, if you don't mind I will keep that. You're not sad that I am your sister?"

"No, it will be so much fun, I always wanted a sister. I was kind off bummed out when I got a baby brother, but he is fun too." She says, the excitement clear as day on her face. Well, that went a lot better than I thought it would go. Happy that Rose is just as excited as me to have her here, we walk to the dining room just in time for Colin to put the last of the food on the table.

He walks up to me and kisses the side of my head before we sit down next to each other, Y/N and Rose next to each other on the opposite side of the table, Cosmo in his high chair at the head of the table. As I quietly feed Cosmo, taking a bite of my plate every once in a while, I can feel this warmth spread through my body. Feeling like that part that was missing from me is finally back and the hole in my heart is filled up again. My family is complete again.

"What are you smiling about?" Colin asks me, tapping my shoulder.

"Nothing, just happy that she is here and that Rose took it so well."

"I love that she makes you so happy and what makes you happy makes me happy. I don't think Rose would have ever found it hard, she has always wanted a sister. Doesn't matter older or younger." He laughs before planting another kiss on my face.

After dinner, we clean up, but I am having a hard time getting Rose to go to bed.

"Rose, come on it is bedtime. Can you just work with me?" The exhaustion of this day starting to settle in and I just want to sit on the couch.

"No, I want Y/N to do it."

"But Y/N is busy right now and she is tired too." I try to offer, hoping that she gives up and just lets me tuck her in tonight.

"It's fine, I'll do it." I hear from behind. I look over my shoulder to see a tired Y/N, but she still has the biggest smile on her face. I mouth a quick 'thank you' to her as she takes Rose's hand.

Y/N's POV

I luckily don't have to do much as she is old enough to do it on her own, but I tuck her in and read her a bedtime story.

"Y/N, why are you my sister but have I never seen you before?" she asks me when I end the story I was reading. Shit, I wasn't prepared for this. She is way too young to understand the whole situation and it is way too late to explain it.

"Well, Uhm, you see, Uhm, that is something for tomorrow young lady. Now it is time to close your eyes,' I put my hand over her eyes, and she giggles,' Can you promise me you won't bug your mom too much." I ask taking my hand off her head, I hear her mumble a 'yes' before I can sense that she is slowly drifting off to sleep. When she is asleep I plant a soft kiss on her head and leave the room.

I walk into the living room where Colin and Scarlett are cuddled up together. I sit down on the other side of the couch.

"You guys are too adorable," I say, this view only confirming more that he is the best husband.

"How did it go with Rose, shouldn't have been too hard."

"No, it wasn't. She did ask me why she had never seen me before. But I love that little bean already way more than I thought was possible."

"Yeah, she has that effect on most of the people that meet her. She had Chris in her grasp after like a day and she was just a baby then. But what did you tell her?" She says.

"That it was a problem for tomorrow," I say, slightly disappointed in myself that I pushed it to the next day. Our conversation however is interrupted by my phone which starts to vibrate in my pocket. I take it out and see that my mom is calling me. I'm confused by the call but then remember that it is Friday and we always call in the afternoon.

"I'm sorry I have to take this call, it is my mom," I say, walking to the guest room that now serves as my room. I sit down on the bed and call her back since I waited too long to pick it up.

"Hey mom, how are you doing," I say when she picks up the phone.

"I'm good, had a busy week. Wait, where are you?" Interrupting herself mid-sentence when she notices I am not in my usual setting.

"Uhm, yeah just at a friend's place. Don't worry about it. I'm in the middle of something can I call you back tomorrow." I say, not in the right space to potentially bring up the issue at hand.

"yeah that is okay, I'll call you then. Take care okay," she says before hanging up.

I walk back to the living room to see that Scarlett fell asleep while I was gone. I sit back down in the same spot as before, making sure not to wake her up. Letting out a deep breath, having come close to having to starting that conversation that I have been dreading. Even though I know that this is not something that I can keep from them forever.

"You okay?" Colin whispers.

"Yeah, just have to figure out how to tell the people that raised me, that I know they aren't my real parents."

"You'll be fine. If you need anything we are both here for you."

"Thank you," I say turning my focus on the show that is playing on the TV. We sit there for about an hour before Colin wakes Scarlett up to take her to bed. I take this as my sign that I should probably go to bed myself. Returning to the room that I still couldn't believe is mine for now.

I lay down and sleep takes me over almostinstantly. Too tired to think about anything else I let it.
