"Get the shuck away from her, give her some air would ya shunks?" This is what you woke up to. You felt so dizzy and weak. You weren't moving your body, but you could feel the up and down movement of walking and the air hit your body softly as you moved along. With eyes still closed, you wondered what was going on. Hesitantly, you squint your tired eyes open to see Newt above you. His eyes were locked on what was in front of him and he breathed heavily as he ran with you in his arms.
Why was he carrying you? Why did you feel so weak? What happened?
"Newt." You quietly and weakly squeaked out. His eyes landed for a moment on yours and his face held a look of what you could not decide was relief or worry. Maybe a mixture of both? But his gaze on you was temporary though as he stared back up at his path he was taking and focused harshly on it.
"Hey, you're gonna be okay, sunshine. I gotcha." Sunshine; This was a nickname given to you by Newt the day you met him and it sort of stuck with a few other of the gladers, including Frypan. You remember that day so well. I mean, it was only a few days into your new life with no memories. Building new memories was all you could hold onto at the time to try and make a new identity for yourself. You showed up in the box so scared, especially being surrounded by only boys who towered over you. Some of which didn't have the best personalities and didn't seem to like the fact that you were a girl. Some liked it too much that you were a girl. It was all overwhelming for you and you refused to speak to any of them and you hid from them most of the time. Most didn't bother to try to welcome you nicely and when you were scared, they found ways to make you more scared and not settle you down. Then one day came, about five days after you had come up from the box. You had found a good hiding spot in the trees of the Deadheads. It was peaceful and you could eat your lunch up there in peace without the disgusting comments of the boys who looked at you like a meal. Just as you were taking a bite of your sandwich, you heard a twig snapped below you. Immediately you froze, in fear they would find you. The sounds of footsteps got closer and closer below you before they stopped suddenly. You gave it a few minutes before you peered down below you to see a boy sitting against the tree you were sitting in, criss-crossed legs, and peacefully eating his sandwich as you were. You stared at the boy for a while. His hair was blond and his body looked thin. And his face, well, you had to admit, it looked sort of... cute. This boy did not look like the majority of them that had berated you for days. He looked gentle. You leaned a bit farther off your branch to get a better look at this mysterious boy when suddenly you lose your balance and you begin to fall out of your tree. Branch after branch your body slammed into, knocking the wind out of you and cutting down your back, arms, and legs. Desperately though, you somehow clung onto dear life onto a tree branch, closing your eyes in fear to feel that last thud, but it never happened. The branch withheld your weight and velocity and you held on just fine. Relieved, you open your eyes to see the boy face to face with you, him looking startled. You looked down only to find yourself not even two feet off the ground. You looked back up at the blonde boy and swallowed harshly.
"Are you okay?" he finally says, taken back by your sudden entrance. To your surprise, he sounded British.
"Yeah yeah, I'm fine." You say shakily, still holding onto the branch for dear life.
"Here let me help you." with that, he grabs your waist and lowers you down gently to the ground. This took you by surprise though, and you could feel your face becoming flushed from embarrassment by the sudden gesture of the blonde. He must have noticed this though because he instantly says, "Oh, I'm sorry I should have asked if you needed help and not just started grabbing you. That's my bad. Please don't think I meant anything provocative by grabbing you." This boy was full of surprises. You weren't completely sure if he wasn't just putting on an act. He scratches his head nervously.
"Hey, I'm sorry all of the Gladers have treated you like shunk. Seriously though weren't not all that bad. Unfortunately I wasn't there to keep them in line when you first came up. But I've heard of how some of them talk about you. I'm guessing that's why you're out here." You nod shyly and lower your head. "The names Newt. I'm second in command here." He reaches out his hand proudly, an invitation for you to shake it, but you just stare at this gesture cautiously and glare at him suspiciously. "Come on, I don't bite, Greenie." This was a term they called you, as you were the 'Newbie'. Even though your name has returned to you in a few hours, no one bothered to ask you it though, so they continued to call you Greenie, and you never corrected them.
You took Newt's hand though and shook it in a cold fish handshake sort of way.
"Now what's your name?" he inquires. This caught your attention though and your eyes lit up in a way that they never have this whole time. No one has ever asked that. No one has bothered to know you. Maybe, just maybe, this boy was different.
"It's y/n." You said with a smile, the first time you had done that since you got here as well.
"Well, that's a gorgeous name. It's fitting." He grins back at you. His comment made you blush and show a toothy smile. "Now look who's finally warming up, miss sunshine over here." He says in reference to your now bubbly personality being lit up by his glowing personality. You two sat back down against the tree you were once perched up in and babbled on about our experiences in the glade.
"Come on, sunshine, I have some people I want you to meet." Newt says as he grabs up your hand as he stands up. But you did not budge. Your smile went away and you looked up at your new found friend, scared.
"It's alright, they're my friends, not the clunk heads you've been dealing with. They know how to actually treat a woman with respect, and while we're up there, we'll get you cleaned up. You took a nasty fall there." You had forgotten about your fall and your injuries from it. With attention being brought to it, you felt your left arm to notice dried blood that had been painted down your arm from a large cut. You could feel more burning down your back as well. Reluctantly you go, staying by his side the whole time as you two surfaced out of the deadheads and into the opening and crowded part of The Glade. As you trudge along, Newt points out the people, who were now up and working at their assigned jobs.
"You see over there are the builders. Those are the ones you've probably been mainly dealing with. They're pretty good with their hands, but there's not a lot going on upstairs." You had to admit, you did see quite a few over there that you recognized for harassing you. He continues on, "Over here are the gardens, this is where I help out a lot mainly when I'm not having to keep order around here. These are our two Medjacks, Jeff and Clint." He waves them off as they pass by. You don't think you've ever seen those two since you got here. "Frypan is our cook, you've probably met him before. Good man, and even better food." He points off into the distance for the rest, "Over there are our slicers. Over there are the Sloppers. Those are our bricknicks. Our baggers are right there, and lastly over there are the runners." You were explained to already about the runners. They nearly scared you to death trying to tell you about the horrors runners may go through and the horrible monsters that lurk in the maze at night. "Here they come now. Ayo, Minho!" Newt calls off into the distance at the boys who had just surfaced, out of breath, from the concrete cavern. One of the boys reacts to Newt's voice and begins trotting towards us. You become increasingly nervous though the closer this new boy gets. You felt as if your throat was closing in and you felt smaller and smaller, like a bug that was so vulnerable to possibly getting crushed at any second. They boy arrived in front of you two in a sweaty mess. His hair stuck up and glistened in sweat and his face looked as if he had just gotten out of a shower, it was that soaked. You could see the outline of his back muscles from the sweat pattern that had soaked through his navy blue shirt. While breathing heavily, he takes the bottom of his shirt and pulls it up to his face to wipe the sweat off that prevailed on his face. While doing so though, your eyes traveled down to his now exposed torso and was stunned at how toned his abs were. You could not take your eyes off of the strained muscular abs that glistened nicely with sweat and his tanned skin from years baking in the Glade. Your trance was finally broken by Newt speaking up.
"So, Minho, you probably know the new Greenie."
"Know her, I've hardly gotten a word in with her. There's so many horny ass shunks in this place that want a piece of her that I haven't even gotten a hello in. It's disgusting." The new sweaty boy, who supposedly went by the name Minho, answered.
"Well now you can, I guess. Minho, meet our new Greenie, y/n." Newt proudly introduces you. Minho gives a quirky smile and nods his head at you.
"Nice to meet ya, y/n. The names Minho. I'm a runner, and I'm not around here very often. You can either find me in the Maze, in the map room, or eating by Frypan's kitchen. Two of those places you're not allowed into though so if you really need me, find me at dinner time."
"Good to know." You say nervously. You weren't used to the calm, respectable mannerisms these two boys offered you.
From that day on, those two boys took you in as their own and defended you from the creeps of the Glade. The annoying and harassing comments stopped soon after Newt and Minho were associated with you. Everyone began to know your name and looked at you like a human being. Well, most at least. Those that were disappointed in getting sent a girl, weren't found to be disappointed for long after you impressed them with the work you could do around the Glade. This became your family.
